I just did a full engine rebuild on my 2.7 and have put about 300 miles on it. Yesterday right in front of my house as I was about to back in my driveway it just died. wouldn't start back up. Sounded funny as hell when trying to start back up. Tested spark and fuel, all good. Tested compression, almost none!

I just pulled the valve cover off and found the chain to be broken. No metallic noises. nothing. I am really hoping I can just pull the front cover off and replace. Thoughts?

a full engine rebuild will be needed, and possible head or block work now...

who did the motor work? yourself? did you us an oem timing chain or aftermarket? why was the engine rebuild needed? how many miles on it?

    Thanks for the response.

I did all the work myself. engine had 203k on it. Head Gasket went out so thats why I did a full rebuild.

I went with OEM everything. I just talked to a Master Tech at Toyota and he said that the tensioner failed. He said it happens. Causing excessive heat and pressure on the timing chain due to it putting to much force on the chain.

I am finding a LOT of contradicting information. Some say these 2.7's are an interference engine, others say its a non. The manual says its a non-interference engine.

Starting on it yesterday. took the belts and pulleys off etc. rotated the crank, all feels great! rotated the cams all felt great! Borrowed a scope from a buddy and stuck it down through the spark plug hole. rotated the cams and everything looks great!!

New timing set will be here Friday. I have to get it jacked up and drop the front axle so I can drop the pan. Hopefully by Saturday she will be as good as new!

Several master techs at Toyota told me it was the tensioner that failed...
