    Hi All,

I picked up a 2015 tacoma a couple days ago and need to tow a light trailer from uhaul this weekend.

Specs of truck: DCLB, 4x4, with tow package.

    I've already purchased a 2" ball hitch.

The harness port is on the back of the truck, below the bumper.

What else do I need to connect the trailer to the truck so the lights work correctly? Some type of wiring harness? And if so where can I get it?

I want to make sure i show up and have all the correct equipment to pick up the trailer and go.

    Thanks.

Since you already have the ball mount, the only other thing you will need is an adapter that goes from the 7-pin socket on your truck to the 4-pin adapter that the Uhaul trailer will have. These are available at most auto parts stores and Uhaul usually sells them also. They're usually under $20.

You'll probably need a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter. Most auto parts store should have them.

I'll go get mine and post a pic.

I have this one, converts to 3 pin or 4 pin.

If this I your first time to haul a trailer, make sure X cross the chain from the trailer to your hitch. Most importantly don't follow to close to the car in front of you and brake lightly remember your pulling a trailer. Be safe.

Funny- last time I went to UHaul for a trailer they basically told me the truck wasn't able to handle one! Yet, I towed a UHaul trailer from Daytona FL to Western Mass fully loaded with a 1991 Hyundai Scoupe many years ago!

    UHaul workers can be idiots.

Hmm if it's brand new I would advise against towing for the first 1k miles or so, you don't want to warp the rotors on a new truck.

Sounds like the pin adapter is the only thing you'll really need...unless they argue with you. I picked up a car hauler and they hooked up the trailer without saying anything to me about weight or what I was hauling.

id have no problem throwing a trailer behind the truck at mile zero.

OP just make sure you change rear diff oil at 5k and you will be good.

ya dont worry about towing with a newer vehicle, you wont warp your brakes or anything bad.

Also remember to laugh at yourself when you cant back up very well! better than getting pissed at yourself.

Wiring has been covered, my question would be how much total (trailer + load) weight and also how much tongue weight. Single axle trailer is probably 500 pounds empty. If you're at or below 1000 with load, it's almost like you're not towing at all. If the total weight is higher, go slower. The real reason some manufacturers recommend a 500-1000 mile no-towing break in is for the rear axle to break in. Tongue weight should be about 15% of total weight - adjust your loading. Not enough tongue weight can cause dangerous sway. Don't know if all uhauls have trailer brakes or not. Generally it's a surge brake and no wiring involved. Uhaul should be able to tell you the weight of the trailer over the phone. Never towed before? Watch cornering, swing a little wider. Backing up ? Hold steering wheel at the bottom and turn the wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go. Do it very slowly, some trailers dart extremely quickly when backed up.

1st time I got a trailer from U-Haul they told me same thing, truck wasn't rated to pull the trailer, class hitch wasn't high enough. I said I think it'll be OK (tongue in cheek), went outside and pulled out the window sticker and showed him the hitch class rating on it. His jaw made a distinct thud sound when it hit the ground (ha)

This is how I was taught, and teach others.. put your hand on the bottom of the wheel - the back of the trailer will go the same direction that your hand goes.. ;)

Short trailers are much harder to back up than long ones, and always stop and straighten it out before it gets too sideways.
