I have a 2009 Tacoma, V6 PreRunner. I need a switched power source near the rear bumper. I'm hooking up a 2nd rear view camera and need switched power. I don't want it to only be on when the truck is in reverse either so it must be on when the truck is on.

I found 3 connectors back there but none had switched power - 1 was for the existing camera, 1 for what I think is the turn signal on that side and one that I couldn't disconnect to test. It had at least 5 wires, including one thicker white one but the connector was odd.

I've searched and can't really find anything and it's taking me a while to test wires and shut off the truck each time to see if it is indeed a switched power source.

    Thanks in advance!

What I did to run power to a camera that I mounted under my rear bumper was just run wire along the frame. It went from my fusebox in the cab, to a switch in the dash board, down and out under the drivers seat, along the frame to the camera.

If I have to do all that I might just tie into the reverse lights and deal with it.

With my way though you can turn it on when ever the truck is on and not in reverse. It makes it great for towing trailers.

while that is true my in dash monitor is set to only show that input when I switch to reverse. Yes i could switch it to another input but I like it switching automatically.

Ah ok. Then tapping the reverse lights make the most sense for your application.

Seems to me you wouldn't have to run that extra switched wire all the way back to the rear. Couldn't you tap it in at the transmission reverse sensor?

FYI there is a mod that allows you to turn the stock camera on at any point in time. I have done it on my 2013 and its great. I can check everything on the tongue of the trailer to make sure everything is good whenever i want.

I'm aware of that mod but I need the 2nd camera because I'm going to be hauling something without the tailgate - hence no camera then.
