Depends on what you do, how you do it, what kind of living/life you lead/want to lead. I grew up in west Asheville to the age of 18; then went where uncle same wanted me to go. It's a great area and very diverse. My folks still live there in Enka-Candler area. Maybe after life in the military I'll end up back in NC.

If you're into the outdoors, it's a great place. Hiking, camping.. All sorts of things to do. Unfortunately I'm in the flat lands but we drive up several times a year.

Quite a few hippy types up there but that is to be expected in mountain towns.

Lots of hippies in asheville. Super redneck just outside the city lol

I love it here. Moved here from Texas in 2010 and never regretted it. Tons of things to do outdoors and some really great places to eat.

Thanks for the input guys, we're going to be making a trip up there soon to see how we like it. Any must go places or things to do while we're there?

Just made a trip there this past weekend, went to the Biltmore. It was a pretty cool place, probably would have enjoyed it more if the weather was better. I'd suggest it just for the complementary wine tasting!

Wife and I are also considering moving to the Asheville area but the biggest concern is employment. Small cities generally don't attract too many, if any, Fortune 500 companies. We're going to head back this summer and check it out a bit closer.

OP - how was your trip up?

It was great, we had a fun time but we concluded that it's not as high on our list as we thought. I would still move there over staying here in Orlando but I'm not sure that's saying much. We weren't excited about how steep some of the areas were. We want to buy a few acres and land seems useless if it's basically a cliff. the town was great but the surrounding areas were older and a bit run down. If we were to come across a house or lot with at least 2 acres of flat land we'd consider it.

We live an hour north of Asheville in the mountains of Tennessee, and once you get a few miles out of the city, land gets cheaper...but it is in the mountains. Coming from Florida, you might find the winters a bit harsh. And we find that snow tires are required in the hills.

Op check out the hickory/lenior area im about 40min bellow Asheville but only about 25minutes from boone/blowing rock which are awesome mountains also. Again this area is mainly outdoor stuff only but both hickory and lenior are nice clean small towns

asheville is a pretty cool place. hippy, outdoorsy, beer drinking people. boone is a little bit north but it is a bit smaller, but the same living environment nonetheless. can't go wrong with the mountains of NC.

    Been here since 1988,

Asheville and the area is wonderful if you like the outdoors and/or beer. Lol...

It's a tad costly to live in Asheville for me, however I can recommend Hendersonville County just south of Buncombe
the county that Asheville is in.

Also the beaches of the OBX can be gotten to in about 7-8 hours.

And I see that mtb in your avatar. Hendersonville, Brevard are mountain bike heaven.

I absolutely love western NC. I go twice a year on average and hope to live in the area someday.

We moved to the area seven years ago to a cabin in the mountains...well work it.
