Order a '15, or wait...

I currently own a 2012 Access Cab TRD Sport in Pyrite Mica, completely stock. I love the truck so much that I would like to order a 4-door, baby is coming in October so I need the extra room for the carseat. The second generation of Tacomas has been quite long, and it seems that they should have had enough time to work out any of the kinks i.e. suspension, vibration, etc... I believe that buying a first year new generation is sort of risky in that you do not know how the new Atkinson engine will run, whether it will have more power and how much more fuel efficient it will be. I still believe that I will wait until I am able to build one online before making my decision, because they have only showed the TRD Off-Road and the Limited so far. Moving forward, I would like to prepare myself for ordering the '15 model, and wait to see if I am wowed enough by the new offerings to sway my decision. Below is the build I am proposing with the limited number of upgrades that I would like done to support my preferred usage of going camping and fishing, lots of gravel roads, and a limited amount of actual off-roading.

I would love to know what you all think of that setup good or bad, if you would do anything different, and what you have learned along the way as far as ordering is concerned.

I just bought the 2015 brand new because if you wait and get 2016 you have to also wait for Mods to come out. But if you stick with the 2015 like you said they worked out the kinks and you can start upgrading ASAP.

 

I just bought a 2015 dclb. I don't like the interior or exterior of the 2016. Nobody knows any specs about the engine or transmission or the reliability. The 2015 has a ton of aftermarket support. The TRD supercharger was available and installed right away.

Looking at pictures, the new tacoma seems to still have a c channel frame and drum brakes. My speculation is that the mileage will be slightly improved, hp numbers will be higher, but torque will be at higher Rpm. All speculation of course.

So for me it was a no brainer. I didn't want to wait until 2016s hit the lot, figure out that I didn't like it, and have to find a leftover 2015 at the last minute. The dealers around me are offering $1600-2500 off of msrp on most of their tacoma inventory currently. At least with a 2015 I know what I'm getting.

 

I went 2015 because I didn't want to wait. Plus, I figured all the issues with 2005-2015 Tacos are already known. Large aftermarket mod support. The 2016 will be a new generation and who knows if it'll be amazing or have issues.

Plus honestly, with the price of the Colorado I can't imagine Toyota won't allow a price bump on 2016 Tacomas. Why not? People will buy them simply because they are Toyota. So why not keep up (prices) with the Joneses? Local dealer has 2015 Taco DCSB TRD for $31k here. Or a Colorado Z71 Crew Cab for $36k.

Absolute worst case if I just HAVE to have a 2016 I can always trade up... Tacomas in my market don't seem to lose resale value at all in the first two years.

 

Get the 2015 with the TRD FJ wheels and weather techs with the cooper tires... but keep the stock size IMHO , good luck with everything

 

Early congrats to you on your baby coming in October!Sounds like you have a great game plan for a 2015 if that's what you choose to do.Love the FJ Cruiser Trail Team wheels!Have them on my 2012 that i absolutly love and is solid!No complaints at all since i purchased it brand new almost 3yrs ago in 2012!The 2015 is the same as the 2012.Your in need of some more space for your new child arriving.I personally at this time don't care for exterior or interior of the soon to arrive new 3rd generation Tacoma!1st year may be a risk through Toyota with the engine,power,fuel efficientcy etc.If your satisfied with the overall picture of the soon to be ending 2nd generation than go for it!Toyota manufactured upgrade part mods and aftermarket upgrade part mods are here for all of us for the taking!If you don't necessarily have to pull the trigger right away with the baby on it's way and are feeling a good vibe about the new 3rd generation coming on a personal level than wait or go the 3rd generation!Good luck!

 

You have enough goodies on there that the factory probably will pick up your build. I found the Tacoma I "wanted" with a sticker about $1500 over what I would have ordered - but the UN-loaded vehicle I wanted maybe would not have been built.

I went ahead and got a 2015 because it is a well known, proven winner. If you are going to be the first on your block to have a particular thing the 2016 Tacoma is relatively low risk, and if you grab one in August or so you'll have time to get through any teething issues before the baby comes.

Proven winner!On point!2016 Tacoma relatively low risk i agree!Example i purchased the all new 2007 Toyota Tundra back in 2007.Although it was a Tundra i had absolutly no problems with it other than had to sell in 2009 for financial reasons.Good stuff Poindexter!

 

Wait.....

....because that's what I'm doing. I've had a few Tacomas, but I'm currently running a '08 4Runner V8 w/ 84k miles. Great vehicle and perfect for a new family. (My first and only little one, my daughter, just turned 1.) It was great to cut some expenses while waiting to see just how much our budget would change with the little one.

Taking a little risk with a first year vehicle but it's a proven engine and it's a Toyota.

Excited to see the new truck come to market.

2015s will get a hell of a discount. '16s will probably take about 18 months from now to even come close with discounts. I got I think $4k off my '15 a few months ago.

 

Depends on your opinion of the 2016's.

If you like it, wait.

If you hate it, better jump on that 2015 and keep it until the 4th gen comes out.

 

Order that 2015 fast if you really want it. Thats if they are even still taking orders on builds. Its almost April and im sure the 2015 production build is coming to an end.

At least wait to drive and see first-hand the 2016s. If you don't like it, you should be able to get a helluva deal on a 2015!

 

I still wonder about this. At least where I look Tacomas simply do not sit on the dealer lot for more than a week or two at the most. With that fast a turn around on stock and with probably a lot of first 2016 allocations going to people who order them months ahead of time I really wonder how many "deals" there are going to be on 2015 trucks. Of course if you are really flexible about what you want (color, options, etc) that would increase the chances of a "deal". But if you are particular about what you want, and especially don't want something loaded with the more expensive and less useful features you might be better off getting a 2015 sooner rather than later (if you really want a 2015 that is).

 

I went with the 2015 Access Cab TRD OR.

 

I just ordered my SR5 V6 on Saturday...still time to get a 2015 to spec...Go for it, it feels so good...lol
