DIY: Badge Removal/Painting/Installation

Just what I needed!

 

Imma go for plum crazy purple on my badges! Will putting purple over black make the purple darker? That's what I'm going for.

Sorry for not reading through 29 pages for this question. But will the badges stick back on to a derped surface? Thinking of derping my whole truck but still trying to decide what to do about the badges.

 

I'm going with no.

If you're dipping the whole truck why not just leave them on? Then you could paint or dip over the dip on the emblems.

 

Or peel it off the emblems

Have you tried plasti-dip? Last 4 ever and 3 times less work. Looked great on my old car and I could blast it with a pressure washer. Didn't start to come off for 2 years. Then, when you want to switch colors, voilà, peel it off and do it again. Have not started to play with the Taco I just bought yet. Will post pics when I do. Yours definitely looks great though. Good work.

 

First post! I have my badges drying right now. I pretty much followed this instructional to the T. I went with a flat black paint and a flat clear coat. I'll post step by step with pics when it's all said and done! So far it looks exactly how I wanted it to.

 

Although I didn't read every post in this thread (so I may have missed it) but it looks like everyone is removing badges to plastic dip them... It has always been my understanding that the whole point (and real wonder of Plastic dip (and similar products)) is to dip in place... I only had my Tacoma a week before completing this mod - Plastic-dip spraying the badges On the vehicle. The real key to plastic dipping is the cleaning step of the badge other part to be dipped. Wash and rinse well.. And then using a lint free cloth, wipe area with Isopropel Alcohol..

Rough mask with paper drape around badge area to avoid any overspray mist and aid in clean up later.

Do a fine mask (within 1/8 inch of badge)

Coating is a 4 step..
1. Lightly coat all directions up/down and X across to get all edges. Dry time: 15 mins minimum between coats.
2. Repeat
3. Repeat
4. Repeat. Final Coat Dry time: 30 Mins

Gently remove fine masking - Dip will pull from body to badge edge - Perfectly..
Any jagged tear away(s) are easily remedied with a wooden toothpick - including inside letters like A & O. Gentle use of toothpick avoid any marring of clear coat.

If for some reason you have a strange tear.. Just take 5 mins remove all dip from the badge.. Wipe down with alcohol and once dry - repeat the steps..

Tips:
Important tech tip: There are two kinds of painters tape - the wide 2" kind is wrinkled (like yellow masking tape) and while great for rough masking.. Not the best for fine edges. You want 1" wide flat 3m painters tape for the fine edge masking. It appears to have a semi-glossy appearance (3m)

I Rough masked all Badges to be dipped / and then fine masked - Before beginning to paint with Plastic dip.

Walk around vehicle coating each badge as described above. By the time you are back to the 1st badge the plastic dip dried sufficiently while tending other badges.

4 trips around the Truck and 40-45 mins later (< Algebra not employed) & all badges are drying with 4 coats applied. Remember, that final coat has longest dry time (30 mins) So go have a beer!

Then:

Starting with 1st badge remove fine edge masking to reveal your work.. If you like the result - remove all overspray masking.. (Any over-spray wipes away with alcohol..)

Remember - slow steady pressure when pulling/removing edge masking produces the best results. Keep toothpick handy.

Reapply wax and buff areas where alcohol was used for prep or cleanup to remove overspray.

 

I hate chrome on a vehicle... Did I tell you that?

For my next trick... Black Pearl front Toyota Emblem... Completed it back mid-week. Turned out perfect to my eye - just in time for Cars and Coffee...

This too is a paint in place product...

Tech Tip:
#1. If painting in garage - Open Hood - makes it unnecessary to mask out hood
#2. After masking out all around the emblem - drape behind emblem to avoid spray painting radiator...

Clean emblem with ammonia based product... (For good adhesion of product.)
Lightly coat emblem with Shadow product - let dry..
(View in Natural lighting between coats.)
Repeat to achieve personally preferred level of Pearl effect.

Let all coats dry... (If you spray too dark shadow is removable with Alcohol based products)

Once desired affect is achieved and dry...

Spray lightly with clear coat (included) to complete the job.

Once dry remove all masking... Enjoy the Better than Chrome new look.

 

Does the double sided tape make the badge stick out any?

 

Just a little bit, but you can't notice it looking straight at them just from looking at an angle

 

Oh okay. Last time I did a badge removal like that I just got the adhesive that they use to put them on with at the factory and it ended up looking good, but it came off after about a year. I don't think I used enough, I was just wondering how much it would stick out with the tape.

 

The thickness of the tape that you use. Like a 16th of an inch, really not much
