Hi everyone. I am new to the site and have a question that has really stumped me. I have a 1998 Tacoma with a 3.4 and manual transmission. From factory it had the push button on the transfer case shifter to engage the 4 wheel drive. That transfer case had a few issues with engaging so it was swapped out in favour of a J shift case out of a 2000 4 Runner. There had to be some mods to tap into the vacuum and a switch installed to acctuate the front differential engagement and disengagement but it works and the so does the 4x4. Here is my problem, I can't figure out how to get the speedometer to work, they are somewhat different and I'm not sure it is as simple as switching the electrical hook up. Without the speedo cruise doesn't work either which is quite inconvenient. I have done a lot of research but all I seem to find is people wanting to know if the swap from a push button to a J shift is possible, which obviously it is but it may need to involve Tacoma to Tacoma transfer cases? Of any one has any input on getting the speedo to work or if I need to search out another case I would appreciate it so much. Thanks you

Both transfer cases use a digital speedometer . With this said , if you jack up the rear of the truck and spin the rear wheels , the speedometer should produce an Alternating wave pattern with a dvom connected to the wiring or directly to the speed sensor . .Set your digital volt ohm meter to AC and spin the wheels ...you should see a voltage being created . The tooth count on the reluctor ring is determined by the ratio of the rear differential . If the speedometer is out , chances are the forerunner came from factory with a different rear differential ratio .
It should be a matter of finding a connector that came from the Forerunner and wiring it up to mate with your original harness .
You should be able to locate diagnostic info here that will help you determine how to connect the wiring to make this work .
