Honest Impressions of stock BFG Rugged Trail T/A tires ONROAD MANNERS ONLY, /NOT/ OFF

Kyle, they have been good in the rain for me, but I see all the time here on TW about reports of them really letting people down. I know for sure there are better options out there but these have not let me down yet! I drive on I-95 everyday at highway speeds and never once have hydroplaned or ever got the feeling that they were ever.
Like I said earlier you know this year has been a historical one for snow fall here in the north east. I am an avid skier and take my rig to the mountains weekly and always feel safe and confident on the road. With all the reports of people hating on this tire, I feel that when the time comes and I replace these tires I will upgrade obviously, but with that I should be king of the road if I can drive with these tires now.

you got that right! I love skiing but its been such a cold winter. Heating the house this year was ridiculous $$$. Better days are coming!

they were ok in the snow,terrible in the rain.worn out by 30,000 miles. i replaced them with Cooper Discoverer H/T. Many people don't like these,however I am happy with them.Quiet and good in the rain and snow.

 

Road Noise (very important for my taste, the quieter the better) Very quiet on the highway. Also very stable at high speeds. I've driven them at 100 mph, and the tires are very well behaved.

On road performance in the rain and snow OK in the rain, no worse than my snow tires. Haven't tried them in the snow.

Wear (not really important to me, unless it unusual wear like sidewall tumors etc.) Changed to Hankook Dyanopro ATMs after 10k. Tires sitting in my garage with a lot of tread left. No sidewall tumors or abnormal wear.

The Rugged Trails have good dry grip. According to the various magazine instrumented tests, you can easily be half a second slower in 0-60 mph going from Rugged Trail to AT KO. 70-0 mph braking with the AT KO is 13 ft longer. Something to keep in mind when changing to an AT or MT tire.

 

6 speed MT here with about 26K on the clock.

Road noise - none from the tires... the cab is by no means sound proof though
Rain/Snow - I haven't had issues in the rain at all. I'm a very conservative driver though and try to accelerate slowly and brake easy to save on gas. They have been great in the snow for me. I have gone up to the mountains for snowboarding trips about 10 times this season and never had issues. The occasional slip when taking a turn or changing lanes and hitting the little middle section of snow buildup but nothing abnormal.
Wear - I have about 25k on them but as I said I'm easy on them. I bet I could get another 30K on them at the rate they're wearing right now. They still look brand new.

Overall I'd say they're a very decent OEM tire for someone who does 95 city/hwy driving and the occasional offroad trip or trip to the mountains for a powder day.

With all that said...I'm going to switch to the Hankook ATMs or the Cooper Discoverer when I can justify these being worn down enough.
