Ok guys, I've done some searching around the forum but I can't find a definitive answer. What am I gonna need to do to put 33's on this bad boy? I've got 2.5" lift, OME 883 and bilstein 5100's in front, 1.5" shackle in the rear. From what I understand I will either need to space it or get new UCA's to fit 33's. I want 285/65/16. Wheels are 16x7.

I think you mean 285/75 16. Your wheels may be a bit narrow at 16x7 but I'm not sure. It may make the tire sit a little taller. You will need to do the pinch weld mod for sure, not a big deal, fun use of a hammer.

Your backspacing on your wheels will determine if you need spacers or not. I have 16x8 on mine with no spacers and no rubbing. If the tire clears the UCA, you're good to go. Your tire shop should be able to take a look and let you know if it will clear.

Cool, yeah I have heard the wheels may be a bit narrow for that tire but I've seen some guys on here with them on 16x7's.

I guess I will just buy the tires and then see what it takes to make them fit :p

Well, I mean worst case scenario sounds like I can just put some spacers on there and fit them fine, that's like an extra $80, so big effin deal. Just will have to see how much the bigger tires bog down my truck then.

Oh and my wheels have no offset I think, 4 inch backspacing. I'm not really sure what that even means though lol

    255/85/16 = 33.1" X 10.50" (nom.)

^ best 33" tire fitment for factory or 7" width wheels.

285 is too wide on a 7" wheel.
Need use an 8" width wheel
or the sidewalls will be sucked in
and tread wear could be irregular.

    Factory back spacing is 4.5"
I am unsure of the factory off set #
but I know it's on the positive side.

If wanting to run a 285 on an 8" wheel...
the back spacing will need be minimally 4.00" or possibly better @ 3.75"

3.75" = less chance of tire rub on the frame at full steering lock.
But pushes the tire outward... and could possibly rub the fender lip slightly.

If sticking with the factory alloys or a 7" wheel width...
I recommend the 255/85/16 for best fitment.
The fact that you already have 7" wheels
that I'll assume clear the brake calipers
makes the 255 choice a no brainer IMO

Thanx for the input.. I will probably either go with 255/85/16 or get some 8"wide wheels. I'm not sure about the difference in looks & performance between those tires though.

I plan to put Cooper ST MAXX 255/85/16r on my taco, currently have my tire guy looking in the fitment guide book. I'll let you know what the official word is on 1st gen tacos and their ability to run 255s. Will try to remember to ask him about 285s as well for the sake of your original Q.

    here's a coupla pics of my buddy's '04 Dcab
    rolling 255's and factory wheels.

    The ExtCab is mine...
    and rolling 285's on 8 X 16 + 4" wheel BS'ing

Both rigs have around 2.5" to 2.75" of suspension lift.
My ExtCab also has a 1" BL

So these should help you visualize/compare a 255 to that of the 285

    ---------------

IMO the tall/narrower tires offer less drag and resistance
and are less abusive to components.

Especially when considering the weak sauce steering rack.

    I'm personally tempted
to go with the tall and skinny tires myself.
    Maybe next round.

Currently I'm rolling 295's and they are nearing a 34"
Taller and wider... but heavier as well.
they rub a lot more then the 285's did.
Also required a 3.75 back spacing to fit acceptably.
I had to use 1/4" hub spacers to accommodate them.
and had to purchase/install longer wheel studs to boot...

and they still rub excessively off road

even if I retain these wheels...
I will minimally drop back down to 285's next purchase.

It's honestly kinda hard to even tell the difference in those two trucks. I'm leanin pretty hard towards the 255's now, they sound like they perform pretty well and look pretty awesome.

Cool man, I'll stay tuned. The only problem with the 255's I can find from researching is possible rub in the back when you're wheeling. That's alright though I don't mind doing some cutting. I plan on doing some mudding, probably not anything too hardcore.

    I don't know what you're reading...
maybe you'd like to share your research horrors ?

My buddy's rear 255's never rub anything out back...
the front tho' ...is a different story.

granted you will need at least 2.5" - 2.75" susp. lift
    to effectively clear during compression.

Both he and I still utilize the factory bump stops out back.

My buddy recently added a 1" BL to his Dcab
    to better clear his front(s)...
An attempt in avoiding to have to tub the front inner fender(s).
But he wheeled the poop out of it, for years, without the BL
and had very little issue with rubbing.

It never seemed to stop us on any trail we've driven.
And we shared a few moderate/difficult trails over the years.

But he's already talking about removing his BL
and cutting the wheel wells (tubbing).
But he'll likely forget to bother in that effort
once he acknowledges the advantage of having the BL.

A stock ride height Tacoma can be made to fit up to 35's
But it requires some extra effort and skill. (ie: cut n weld)

It was just a guy on the "255/85/16 owners experience" thread. But yea I've got at least a 2.5" lift so I probably won't have any problem. What about mileage? How much do you think they will effect it?

too many factors for anyone to guess.

fuel consumption will naturally be worse...
but those numbers will be further exacerbated
if the axle(s) gear ratio is not supportive.

    other contributing factors...

    speed and tire psi

Honestly if you're concerned with fuel mileage...
then bigger/taller tires are generally a bad idea.

In the world of off road...
every millimeter of clearance can make the difference.
Not so much with a street rig that only occasionally sees dirt.

Hmm alright. Do you know of any good 16x8 wheels with 3.75 inch backspace? I like flat black soft 8, but a cursory search of the Internet hasn't yielded much.

I tried to find 16x8 wheels with less than 4'' backspacing and didn't have much luck. 4'' should be good.

I'll be fitting 285/75R16's onto my truck this weekend so I'll let ya know how that goes...Not much experience with 255's though.
