Trouble started when we got a lot of snow. The guy never showed up to plow my drive. Anyway the next morning I jumped in the truck, went to neutral 4 hi then 4 low as usual. Pulled out drove to the end of the road where the road was in better shape. Stopped, went to neutral, 4hi negative. Wth. Tried again. No dice. The truck was stuck in 4lo. It only will go out if I shut the key completely off and then turn the key back on. it works every time that way but I have to turn the selector then the key off and back on, then it will switch. My mechanic said he checked fuses and ecu. He couldn't find anything Wrong. Didn't want to charge me a lot of money for searching when it actually does work, just not exactly right. changed axles, and serviced differentials while he had it. Question is what in the world am I looking for? I thought it was the dreaded actuators. Thanks.

Why not just go into 4 hi, instead of 4 low? Have you tried that?

Also don't take the actuator out of the equation just yet. There could be moisture in it that cause some short.
