If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
I posted this on another site, but I figured I would get your guys' feedback/opinions as well.

I have been wanting a solid .308 for some time now, and have been trying to convince my dad to sell me his M1A (but that's not gonna happen anytime soon ;)). I don't necessarily need a semi, a bolt gun is fine - I mainly want a good versatile rifle that I can keep in the truck, take back-packing/camping, use for target/plinking, small game hunting, and mid-range distance shooting (<400 yds.)

I have narrowed down my choices to either the Ruger GSR (6829 or 6830) -OR- the Mossberg MVP Scout (27778) which was announced this year, but not yet available (end of May hopefully).

Mossberg doesn't have a stellar reputation for QC and Longevity, but my 930spx has run flawlessly and I have had no issues, but I do a thorough cleaning/oil after every 300rds. I have considered Savage as well, but I am leaning more towards the Mossberg or Ruger.

Anyway, I thought the MVP Scout was worth looking into since the price-point is likely going to be $200-$300 less than the GSR. LuckyGunner did a pretty good review of the (.223 chambered) MVP Patrol VS the GSR:
    http://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/ruger-gunsite-scout-vs-mossberg-mvp-patrol/
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMSydO0ALlA

Mossberg MVP (I like the 27778 model):
    http://www.mossberg.com/products/rifles/centerfire/mvp-series
    [IMG]
I love the front fiber-optic sight on the MVP, as well as their ability to accept standard M1A/AR10 mags. The full length top rail is a nice add-on, so it can accept a standard or long relief scopes (but it also limits access to the receiver if needed). It also has an adj. trigger from 3-7lbs (3.5lbs factory). Additional side-rails and added rear Ghost Ring sight are nice add-ons (I absolutely love the GR and fiber sights on my 930).
MSRP on the Scout is $777 (realistically, around $600 when it becomes available)

Ruger GSR (I like the 6829 or 6830 models):
    http://www.ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/models.html
    [IMG]
Proven quality and longevity. The quality of the Mauser-style bolt extractor is the standard for bolt guns, so I would be concerned with the MVP's bolt quality and feeding. Plus, with the added rail above the MVP's receiver, it might make it more difficult to clear FTFs or feed issues. I like that the Ruger is now offered in Stainless/composite, whereas the MVP is only offered in matte/blued finish.
MSRP on the GSR is $1075 (realistically, around $750 on-sale)

While there are specific "pros" with each model, the out-of-box features of MVP Scout and GSR are most appealing to me. I would prefer to do little-to-no mods to the rifle, aside from optics - so stock configuration/features are important to me.

Here is the Savage Scout 11s that I was looking at as well:

    SCOUT 11S

A few things I spent time considering on the Savage 11 Scout:
    • I love the idea behind their AccuStock (aluminum bedding block) and the adj. comb rider is a nice bonus.
    • It weighs slightly more (1-1.5 lbs more) and is over 4" longer than the MVP/GSR, since it has an 18" barrel and (permanent?) muzzle brake
    • The AccuTrigger is a great system, but with the adjustability/similarity on the MVP trigger, I feel the MVP can achieve the same "crisp trigger"
    • I prefer the (front and rear) sights on the GSR and MVP, with the MVP's Ghost Ring and front Fiber Bead being my favorite setup for iron sights (love them on my 930!!!)
    • Replacement mags are another deciding factor as well; the Savage using it's own proprietary mags, the GSR accepts a few different styles, and the MVP uses any standard M1A/AR10 magazine
    • I'm not sure if the muzzle brake is removable, as it is on the GSR/MVP (which both incl. a thread cap as well)

Nothing against Savage - they make great firearms in general, I just found the GSR/MVP to fit the bill for what I am looking for - whereas the Steyr is the least-appealing to me (mainly due to the price tag) even though it is the one that meets Cooper's "Scout Rifle Criteria" in every category.

Also, I would be lying if I said looks/aesthetics did not have any influence on my decision too....the MVP Scout and GSR are both drool-worthy, but the MVP Scout wins the beauty pageant in my opinion ;)

Would I be stupid to save some $$$ by going with the MVP Scout? What feedback/experience do you guys
have on either of these rifles?

I have owned all three brands you are considering. The Ruger and Savage rate together in my experience, with Mossberg a bit behind. I would probably go with the Savage myself. However, my Mossberg experience was many years ago. My gut feel is that you will probably be happy with whichever you choose.

Thanks for the feedback man! This is a pretty tough call, they are all nice rifles in their own right. I've had good luck with my 930spx, but I will say that it was filthy right from the factory.

...and I think your gut is right, I would be happy with any of these choices...but my wallet might make the decision for me :D

I have a Mossberg 500 12g, it's great, but their rifles seem sloppy on the tolerances. I have been eyeing a Ruger scout for a while, but now I may check out the Savage seeing that they make one.

I was eyeing the same rifles as you, I've shot the Ruger and it's nice- I was planning to get that. But then I decided to save up a bit and I picked up an M1A Scout Squad. Love it. I'm glad I waited and got the M1A.

I will be pleasantly surprised if the Mossberg feeds reliably from the AR10/M1A mags. If it does it will be a very cool rifle, but I have a feeling it won't

I have a 930spx that has treated me well, and eats anything I feed it. Haven't had any issues so far, and the MVP seems to be a pretty successful platform (so far).

I'd love to get a M1A, but it's out of my budget (and I'm still hoping that I might end up with my Dad's someday). The Socom16 would fit the bill for what I'm looking for, but still about $800 too expensive.

Yea, that is one of my concerns as well. I've watched a few videos and read reports of "wobbly" mags, but the .308 seems to have no issues compared to the .223 MVPs (reports of cracked mag wells).

This video is a decent demo:

Just seeing Mossberg's standard short pull deer rifle specifically the 243 that I looked at in Academy a few months back, it would be hard to sell me on that. The slop in the bolt-receiver connection was pretty darn bad.

I find mossberg pump shotguns to be good bang for your buck low-price range shotguns, but shotguns and rifles are two different systems.

I would personally look at them in the store if possible, but I would lean towards the Ruger.

Duly noted, thanks for the input.

It might be a month or so before the Scout is in stores. Cabela's hasn't had the Patrol (or GSR) in-store for me to check out, but I will see if I can track one down locally to compare them.

Well, I chose the MVP Scout...found one in-stock for $550 shipped to my local FFL and also got (3) different mags to try (CMI, Pmag Gen3, ProMag) along with a decent hard-case and 3-9x32 scout scope (UTG bug buster). All for under $700.

We will see how she shoots and what loads will work best. It has a 1/10 twist, so it should handle 147-175gr. pretty well. I know there are skeptics out there, but I compared the GSR and the MVP Patrol in-person and found the MVP bolt to function fine with tighter tolerance than the GSR...might be fluke, but I think any new bolt will wear-in and perform fine for years. My 930spx has served me well, and Mossberg CS has been great so I have no reason to regret the decision.

The UTG Scope (SCP-M392AOLWQ) is also a big point of contention, but for the cost you would be hard-pressed to find a better scope (even rivaling Burris, Nikon, Leupold's similar budget models). The reticle and cross-hairs are dead-level on mine, the QD rail mount is fantastic, it holds zero fine, positive locking turrets w/ 1/4"MOA adj., 3yd-infinty parallax adj. It is actually a damn nice scope, and I got it for $40 during an Amazon sale.

This case is pretty cheap at Walmart right now. $27

AR's in 308 are right around 800 these days.... just saying :) My Bushmaster BR-308 has been the most fun gun I've ever owned.

Yea, I don't need/want an AR, hence the Scout Rifle title. If I were to get a semi, it would be a S/A M1A, no question.
