Update: I put it on for the pics and given the tedious nature of the front two bolts as mentioned I left it on and it's grown on me. I plan to leave it in place so the yeas beat out the nays. Thanks to everyone who had some input!

I would go with the hoop for functionality. I've had times where I would of loved to tie my canoe down with a strap to a hoop rather than to the skid plate hook. just my opinion.
