1999 Tacoma SR5 with 112,xxx miles now has the engine light turning on every 3rd time I start the truck. It last for about 2 drive cycles and then goes away for a while. I'm looking to get a code reader but most say they don't work on anything older than '03. Any suggestions?

yes... get the actual code. I have a fleabay code reader and it
reads my 2013 taco and 1999 4runner no problem....

you need a multi-protocol reader, or at least one that reads ISO

based on symptoms....in most likely order

    a) the MAF needs a spritzel with cleaner,
    b) TPS is wearing out....
    c) or the a/f or 02 sensors is on it's way out
