Wasn't at my best today. It's only the 3rd oil change on my new truck and cross threaded the drain bolt. What other options do I have other than a new oil pan?

The oil pan is an easy replacement, as the bottom one (One with the plug), is small, and not that expansive. Otherwise, drill it out, and tap it for a larger plug.

Or drill it out and helicoil it for the same threads if you want to keep it stock-like.

says the guy driving a jeep...
ummm no. at least not without removing the pan.

remove the pan, then tap it. or just buy a new pan.

if you go drilling and tapping that pan while its installed in the truck where exactly do you think the metal shavings are going to go? they dont turn into pixie dust.

I think the "remove the pan" step is kind of a given. Or maybe you're messing with chris and I'm missing your sarcasm...:anonymous:

You still save for the cost of a pan if you just tap it to a larger size.

At this point, I think I'm just gonna get a new pan and perhaps install a Fumoto valve while I'm at it. I have a skid plate, so will need to get a low profile valve.

    Thanks all.

In this situation I'd use a Timesert. Different than helicoil. Perfect and designed for this type of situation. http://www.timesert.com/. any tapping that needs to be done no matter how you handle it put a blob of grease on your tap. It holds any metal chips as you tap. Far cheaper and quicker than replacing the pan and its a permanent repair. I've used them with great success on Harley pans etc.

I checked out the kit for this application, and it's ~$95, which is the price of a new oil pan online. You do end up with a steel threaded insert though, if that's one advantage over the new pan.

They make oversize self tapping drain plugs. Just go to an auto parts house and pick one up for a few bucks.
