Ok I am seeking opionions and advice on when to change my timming belt on a 2004 Tacoma 3.4L. I have 55k on the truck and it is 11 years old. Should I wait until 80k or because it is 11 years old should I change it now. Any advise is appreciated.

    Thanks

On 1998 & later models, replace every 90,000 miles or 72 months.

I would take off the timing belt cover on one side and take a look. No cracks on the belt is a good sign.

The local Toyota dealership recommended I change mine at 60k because the truck was 10 years old. (this was in 2011 and the truck is an 01) I waited... I did it last year 2014 and the truck had 85k on it. The belt didn't look perticularly bad, frayed, or cracked, and it was 13 years old. It's ultimately up to you... But I'd wait if I was you.

Yea I fell into this deal I had a 1995 T-100 4x4 SR5 that had 147k on it and I could not pass this one up. Its been sitting in a garage for the last two years. The owner put 10k on it since 2008. I just want to see what other owners think about the timming belt deal.

    Thanks for the responses

Really up to you man. I would change it just as preventative maintenance, however do check the belt. If it looks good, just wait until the 90k interval to change it. Currently, mine has 189k on it still going.

Just look at the build thread
Is there any reason to change it before it breaks?

Mine has 140K and no cracks on the timing. But the rest of the belts have cracks.

I'm waiting till I see another deal at the dealer. Last time it was 300 dollars for the timing belt only.

Yeah cause its gonna break on ya when your in ButtFuck Idaho and its gonna cost you $400 to tow it so you can spend another big chunk of change to do the maintenance you should've done when you were able to drive it to a shop

Do you realize it's probably much cheaper to change it before it breaks ?
Do you know how fast that belt turns? When it breaks.... It's gotta go somewhere and it won't be pretty.

They always break when running from the cops or drug deals gone bad. Consider it preventive maintenance.

relax that 55k is nothing but if ur bank account is stuffy then

    Reserected from the dead.
I have a confession to make.

I went 225,000 on my present belt. I changed it first at 80k. Truck was showing signs of the frame rotting thru, so I said fuk it. 300k and it was still running. The frame finally breathed its last at that point. Truck was not worth putting the effort into re framing.

Kept the motor and transmission as a spare for the one in my signature...which I doubt I will ever use.
