So im hearing stock is already a CAI system and its best to stick with that,,, and all the AFE,Airraid, Aem and Volant all have to have a attachment... whats the truth?

Am i better off sticking with a stock intake that has a cold air induct or going for a aftermaket with a bigger air filter...

Just bought my Tacoma 3 days ago and want to start adding items to it,,,just dont know where to start,,,,I know at times people will lean towards one product that has proven to work good, i just havent found it yet...

    Thanks guys

well thats another debate i seen a while ago about the aftermarket filter (k&n)for the stock intake was junk and that stock was better.. Never really did get a true confirmation about this..
Some say k&n is shit, some say great.. Who the hell knows anymore.. Guess unless someone posts some solid results, then its all talk:frusty:

maybe...............but when an intake costs around $250, and there is barely any gain at all......why bother?

Based on some research here on the board, the TRD might be worthy of a conversion but honestly I think its just eye candy. For me its all about bang for your buck. There is no real hard data here that warrants the K&N will get you anything more than an oily mess. As with any performance mod its a game of inches, you may gain from the intake, the exhaust and some better plugs, but individually these mods are hard to measure. A properly tuned system involving all of these areas might net better performance. Beyond that in order to really gain any HP it requires a lot of green.

So after hours of research,,, looks like the best way to go is stock intake with a AFE drop in air filter,,, Right?

My oil samples, when a K&N was run, came back with silica levels maxed. When the OEM filter was used, there was the very minimum.

I didnt notice much of a gain in HP or MPG when I put on my AIRAID but then again that is not why I installed it. I put my AIRAID on because I like to go mudding and off roading and the stock intake come through the wheel well which would cause all kinds of things to get sucked in my filter area. Basically I put it on because they dont make a snorkel for the 05+ Tacomas and this was the next best option.

Actually, the intake is very well protected in the fender. More so than the Airaid you have now.

Where do you send you oil samples? How much? TIA

Just went wheeling this weekend with an unamed guy (protect the guilty ;)) and he had a cold air intake that caused it to stall out using the grill as a water scoop. Had to tow out. Another guy with a stock brand new truck went through with minimum problems - Fender acts as a air pocket compared to grill.

I send mine to Caterpillar. Usually, I have my Dad send mine in with his, as well as any construction equipment he is having SOS performed on. I dont have to pay that way. :)

agreed.. So far there is more bad than good about the CAI.. I have a k&n filter in mine, and unless someone can show me evidence this thing is more bad than good it will stay in..

so in lamens terms chris, what does that mean exactly? too much silica is clogging the air flow? In your opinion would you run the k&n filter or a stock paper filter? And if stock paper which one would you run?

That means its letting dirt into the engine. If I could run any filter in the world, it would be OEM. I prefer filtering capability as opposed to a "Higher Flow" filter. Any High Flow filter is only going to show gains when under WOT, and how often is this the case? The gains are negligable, and seem to fall within the margin of error of the dyno (In my testing), so Im not convinced they really have an impact on the engine performance wise. Given the surface area of the OEM filter, it flows quite well as is.

well then I will pull the filter out right now as I was not convinced to begin with and up for sale goes a K&n w/ less than 800 miles..
    thx cris:D
