    I have a 2012 2.7 tacoma.
A few days ago I had a CEL code p0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold)

I erased the code, and it's been off for a couple of days.
Today, after being on the interstate for a couple of hours, I suddenly lost all power. The CEL is back on. Exhaust has a funny sound to it, almost like a fluttering noise.

The truck will start and idle just fine, but if I give it gas, there's absolutely no power whatsoever.

I'm thinking maybe a clogged catalytic converter? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'd start by pulling the code again, but I think you're onto the issue.

A clogged fuel filter will have a similar symptom, but I think I read here we don't have fuel filters?

A collapsed muffler will do the same.

The cat may not be 'clogged' like you'd think of a dirty filter, it may be collapsed and clogging the exhaust stream. You can test by disconnecting on the front side of the cat, creating a giant exhaust leak, and see how it runs. You can also tap on the cat with a mallet, and if you hear rattling, well, you shouldn't.

It's an emissions item, so hopefully you're covered under that warranty. (8 years, 80k?)

Let us know the end result!

    Thanks for the info!
I'll see what I can figure out, and then report back.

Another question, if it does turn out to be the cat, and it's not under warranty, what do you all think about aftermarket replacements?

    For example, Bosal 118807-05341360
Any issues with these? Looks like it's an exact replacement.

When you price an OE cat, you'll likely think aftermarket is just fine

I think it's the exhaust switching valve that is mounted on the top of the exhaust manifold that done gone south.

Is this the switching valve for the air injection that operates during the first 10 seconds at cold startup?

I believe it is but I could be wrong on both counts (symptoms and fix for the OP's problem) Sub'd for an answer, though.

I am sorry you are having this problem with your engine. You will need to tell us some more information to help us find your problem. When you cleared your code, and you drove your Tacoma, did it drive OK or was it having some difficulties accelerating or staying normal at idle ? When your check engine light came on, was it a solid light or was the check engine light flashing ? How did you clear your check engine code from your computer? Are you competent in working on your Tacoma, and do you have tools ? When you can provide us with some more information, a proper repair will be easier. Good Luck.
