The general consensus with Pioneer these days seems to be that they're more interested in bells and whistles than sound quality, since bells and whistles are what the general public is interested in.

If you're running stock speakers and never plan to upgrade past that, I'd say go for it. Otherwise you're probably better going with an Alpine Kenwood, or even JVC head unit to start building your system.

I am. I had a kenwood before that... I sold car stereo for 4 years before joining the military and usually stick to Alpine or Kenwood for my decks... however the Kenwood was so slow to boot/respond to touch commands.

The Pioneer is actually very good. the sound quality is just as good as the kenwood as far as my 34year old ears can tell (have Alpine type S speakers the previous owner put in)

Just installed a Pioneer AVIC-6000NEC double din....all the "bells and whistles" and great sound too. Great improvement over the stock head unit. I'll be upgrading the speakers next. So far very satisfied with it. Crutchfield had the 6000 on sale and I jumped on it. Youtube is loaded with video on the full Pioneer line......good luck

I had a pioneer p8400bh in my FJ and I loved it. Great sound quality, responsive, plus the dual USB is a big plus.

I have PIONEER AVH-4600BT I'm about to install.
Kenwoods are not intuitive. I know because I had one.

I have one in my Jeep, no complaints. Sound quality is fine, easy to use, bluetooth works well.

I guess its all a matter of opinion. I had a Pioneer AVIC-D3 in my Highlander and thought the sound was fantastic.

I have everything preassembled and ready to go.
backup camera tapped into power at rear L backup light, RCA snaked to dash.
    Microphone routed, etc.
Mainly what is holding me up is a micro motion bypass switch-hurry up UPS.

    My big question is this...

Off the factory Pioneer harness is a "Violet/Purple" wire labeled as "Reverse Gear Signal Input".
This is a short wire like the rest of the harness wires, unlike the long green Parking Brake wire which leads me to believe that I don't have to fish and snake this wire to a long tap in which I don't even know where to tap this purple wire into.

    Does anyone have a answer?

AVH-6300BT here. Sounds great, but I think the audio interface is just garbage. No option to display the complete song title or artist (or scroll it), even though there is a ton of screen real estate available.

Pioneer's have a great sound. Go for it. I have a Pioneer 4300 running a complete JL Audio system and it sounds amazing. Stay away from Kenwood. Pioneer = Alpine

You knw that maybe my issue. I had one of those things that fools it so it will play DVDs while moving. I just assumed i didn't have to hook up the "in reverse" b/c of the fooler which makes me the fool. Where does the reverse wire hook up to?

The reverse wire hooks up to the reverse light circuit in the truck. If the vehicle had factory back up camera in the Headunit, then there should be a signal wire in the harness. I don't know if that is correct for your truck or not - but the easy way to do it is tie your purple wire to the reverse light circuit. I dug around and found that you can find that signal wire here:

Also go read page 43 in the manual for your radio - there is a setting where you have to tell it how to handle the reverse camera - like auto sense or not.

    Manual is here: http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/130/130X4600BT.PDF

If you dont have the factory backup cam (like me), there is a reverse wire that is red with a white stripe in your kickpanel by your feet. Search around here and there are quite a few threads with pics, thats how i found mine. Beware there are 2 harnesses down there with a red/white stripe wire in the same location on the harness (top left corner), but only one is the reverse wire (obviously). Good luck.
