I have ordered a new Tacoma.

It won't be here for two months (I ordered a base model with no frills with a 4 cylinder engine and 5-speed).

How soon should I do the first oil change?

Can I start doing it myself or when you have a new vehicle must you bring it in for a dealership inspection in the first 2,000 or 5,000 km?

I have never bought a new vehicle in my life (at 61) and I don't know what I'm getting into. I'm hoping this is my first and last new vehicle.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I'd change the oil around 3k then use 0-20 synthetic from then on. Also, I'd switch the rear diff oil over to synthetic around 6k.

If the truck won't be here for 2 months, I would definitely wait more than 2 months to change the oil.

no need to take it to the dealer, infact i recommend against it.

Grab a case of oil filters on ebay... 10 of em for 45 bucks

Oil change intervals on the I4 are 10k miles. I would do an oil and filter change at 2k to get the break in oil out then do oil n filter every 10k with the proper 0w-20. Also dont forget to grease your driveshaft u joints every 5 to 10k or so.

I would also change the rear differential fluid at ~5k miles then at standard intervals after that, your pinion and carrier bearings will thank you

    1. There's no requirement to take the vehicle back to the dealer for inspection after any period of time or milage. You can do all the maintenance yourself or at an independent shop as with any used vehicle.
    2. When I bought my truck, the salesman recommended the first oil change to be done at half the normal interval specified in the maintenance booklet, for break-in. This is just a recommendation. Since you talk in km, are you in Canada? Road salt eating the frame will probably limit vehicle life instead of engine wearout. Keep that in mind.
    3. The 4-cyl oil filter is located in an inconvenient place. Decide for yourself whether it's worth the aggrevation to change it yourself vs going to the dealer.

    Thanks Ken.

I'm in BC, western Canada. I'm on the coast too, lots of rain and no snow. When I occasionally travel in the interior in snow, yest I suppose I encounter some salt when they salt and sand the roads, but it is NOTHING like Ontario and Quebec.

I'll have a look at the filter location. My mechanic is very close if I decide to have it done by him instead of me.
