I tow a 325 pound aluminum trailer with a Yamaha Grizzly which combined weights around 700 pounds and I never had issues. I barely notice it especially with the Firestone airbags. Something is not right, but I do notice a dragging sensation when the trailer tire PSI is low but that would not explain the burning smell.

I have a 2002 Tacoma 4cylder and I pulled a 10,000 lb dump trailer full of top soil. I had no problem pulling but I knew it was back there.

If you were towing your mother in law that may have caused the issues.

1 passenger and the weight of my mods exceeds your tow weight. I would suggest there may be an issue with the electric brakes. If no issue found I would get the truck in the shop for a look. The best of luck.

Meh, Synthetic is a waste of money in the rear end imo.

We used to tow our 21ft boat with our tacoma and the motor was actually pretty impressive, Ive also towed a 14ft uhaul trailer and had no issues. We did end up with a half ton to tow the toys (much better braking, acceleration, and handling for long trips). But I would say you shouldnt have any issues towing your load, seems odd.

My pop up is about the same weight and I just bought a '14 Tacoma. Did you have to beef up the rear end at all with air shocks/bags? Just curious as I haven't hooked up the trailer yet.

Invest in a transmission tempurature gauge. I use a scan guage II.

Pulled a trailer about 1000 miles last week. Truck felt fine. Didn't smell anything. Everything seemed great. I was happy.

Until I looked down and saw the gauge was showing my transmission was at 275 degrees and climbing.

Moral of the story - seat of the pants doesn't always work.

I just traveled through the mountains yesterday and in a long climb (no trailer ) my trans was hitting close to 200. Seems high, but also don't think anything was out of the ordinary. Seems high fir a vehicle with a cooler. It was like a constant climb for 15 minutes. No smell. I don't think it was the trailer that first time, so I guess I'll just keep an eye in it

Unrelated - where are you getting your tranny temp?

Have your fluid checked. Lots of new tacomas prove to be low on tranny fluid from factory.

Did you have a factory undercoat or anything else that could be cooking? Otherwise I'm stumped.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    Manual or automatic transmission?

At 70 MPH weight is less of a factor than wind drag. I have thousands of towing miles on my 4 liter 6 spd. with about 3,000# of camper.

You're out in the Berkshires. There are plenty of hills out there.... did you have the gear selector in 'D' or '4' the whole time?

I have a 2015 DC sport 4x4 that I have had for almost a year to the day, I just hit 7,000 miles on it and every once in a while when I get out of it I get a whiff of something burning. Dealership says it's fine. I towed a 2000 Honda Civic on a U-Haul dolly one time about 30 miles. Other than that it's been normal driving. No clue, everything seems fine.
