    Here is the situation:
My hood was cheaply repainted about 8 years ago and the clear has started to peel (by previous owner). I managed to scrape it all off so it's down to the base color layer.

I am not really interested in getting it professionally repainted because I'm cheap and because it will just get all scraped up during the first wheeling trip after.

    Here are the two options:

    1) Repaint it red with Duplicolor Perfect match rattle cans and clear. That will look okay but it won't match 100% and people will know it was rattle canned.

    2) Rattle can it black. Easy to touch up, won't be stock so everyone will know it was painted black on purpose.

If you have any pics of an impulse red truck feel free to post em up!

id say red will look better. If you have a local auto paint supply place they can use there little gizmo on your truck to measure and make the exact paint to match what is already there. Then they can put it into rattle cans for you, this way its an exact match and good quality auto paint.

    Yes sir
Yea this ^. Can't imagine they'd charge you too much to match it and put it in some cans for you. It'll definitely look better

The quality of the paint isn't the issue so much as the quality of the painter. Haha

This is exactly my problem I am having. Just did my front end conversion and have a white hood with my silver truck. Got a quote for $350 from maaco and that is way to high. Can get the supplies to do it myself for less than $100 for lunar mist or just plasti dip it black for $15. I'm scared to actually paint it myself because if I fuck up then that's a waste of money but if I do well then it will look the best. Black doesn't look all that bad but like you said too, it looks like you painted it black yourself.

just take your time and make sure the prep work is done properly and it will turn out fine. just do multiple light coats until you get the coverage you want. IMO a black hood would look like a failed half assed attempt at a body repair.

A full black hood makes it look like you replaced the hood and haven't painted it yet. It's right up there with people that smear bondo over rust and then rattle can over the top of the mess of plastic without even bothering to sand.

Matching red from Napa will be about $120 and black would be $25

Bedline it like 45acp did before his truck ended up in pieces. Less rock chipping too.

I'd do a combo of both.

Paint it yourself and match it as best as possible. Doesn't have to be great. Then lay down a piece of anti-glare vinyl over the top of it.

    Monstaliner.

Get their chip set, and either pick a very close red, or a complimentary gray, black or something.

If it's an off roader, you'll may like it so much you wind up doing the whole truck someday. :D

i vote red with your grill being color matched as it is. That and black anti glare would look good

I would go for something like this .... Black on the outside , Red in the middle.
The red in the middle won't be side by side the oem fender , thus slight difference in color won't be so noticeable .... And .... Can be rattled , and look custom . Take a couple days to do it in steps , mask off , take your time , patience pays off.
    Just my 2 cents

I'd bet her Beaver is Red too !

i went through this same dilema, i ended up buying 3 cans of the perfect match paint.. it wasnt enough paint, then i tried to wet sand it to get a less rattle can looking finish with underwhelming results.. i would grab a pic but the truck is muddy right now..

i do like the idea of getting some clear antiglare vinyl

That is my concern with red, even if I get the napa paint it will still look like a rattle can job. Whereas people would know the black was supposed to not match.

I cant use clear vinyl because when the clear peeled it left weird waves in the base color. You can see it in the pic a bit.

The other thing is a pro repaint (someday down the road) will cost the same whether it is going on shitty black or shitty red ha

I got a quote to have my hood repainted on my Land Cruiser and I was looking at about $400. I'm in the same boat and I think I'm just going to repaint it myself sometime this summer.

Rattle can is tough to make look good on a large flat surface like this. If you decide to do it that way, my suggestion would be to take your time and be sure to wet sand the paint before you do the clear to try to take out as much of the "feathering" as possible. The trick with clear is to put it down thick enough that it doesn't develop that same kind of "feathering". I did this when I rattle canned my fiberglass fenders and it worked out pretty well.

My hood is white with clear coat and has rock chips. I've found conflicting views on what to do. Do I:
-Sand down to complete metal, primer, then paint, then clear
-Scuff up the existing paint, fill rock chips with bondo?, primer, then paint, then clear
