    Hey All,
So I have two bad CATs, confirmed by dealer. If I get my hands on some CA illegal (49 state) CATs will the smog shop know? I've heard some smog shops look and some don't.

    Thanks

50 state / CA legal cats will have the proper stamp on the cat themselves.

if a smog shop wants to stay in business with recent crack downs that have been done over the past year or so, they do their shit by the book.

pony up for the OEM cats unfortunately.

Barring any major mechanical issues, your truck should pass the functional inspection of the smog check. It's just a machine that will be connected to your OBDII port to read any error codes, the second portion of the smog check is the issue, it will fail the visual portion of the check. The smog technician will specifically inspect the Catalytic converter among other parts. It will be up to him if he passes or fails it with non CARB installed parts (California Air Recources Board), so unless it's CARB certified it will likely fail. You will have to find a smog shop that will look the other way, and pass the visual inspection or maintain OEM CATS. God Bless the Golden state.

In twenty years of having to smog my vehicles I have never seen a smog tech look under a vehicle in California. They may look around the engine bay briefly but nothing more. But like you said they plug into the OBDII and in just a few minutes of idling it's done.

They may not bother to look underneath a Camry, Prius or a minivan as are common in city vehicles, but CAT inspection is part of the visual inspection. If you haven't replace your CATS/CAI with non Carb compliant parts in the past 20yrs then you need not be concerned with not passing. My point is as mentioned it will all depend on where you go, if the tech feels like or not doing his job properly, you should know this.

I used to live in San Diego and had to get my Mustang Foxbody smogged as usual. I never failed due to cats (however; I did have the correctly stamped Magnaflow cats at the time). I was questioned once for my MSD cap and was told that they couldn't perform the test because they couldn't read the timing on my balancer. Other than that, I've never had a hard time with smog tests.
