    OK good to know. I am assuming the windshield is not laminated?

    so in Colorado it's legal to have tint on your windshield (less than 30% light blocking I mean)? I know every state I've looked into it doesn't allow windshields and has a pretty strict limit on front side windows (Oregon for examle, my state of residence, is 35% on front side windows, 100% for the others and the rear but 0% allowed for windshield)

    That would explain why I see so many people here with tinted windshields...lol

    Windshields are laminated because they're not tempered.

    All the other windows are tempered so they shatter into tiny little (not sharp) bits.

    The windshield is not tempered so to keep it from breaking into giant, heart piercing shards of death it's laminated.

    I think if the windshield were tempered it would shatter everytime it got one of those little rock chips.

    I think I know these things....

    The windshields are laminated, which makes them a structural component to the roof. I think it's like 40% of the support to the roof in a roll over. It's also why we now leave them intact unless we absolutely have to take them out in vehicle extrications.

    OK so then there IS UV protection in the windshield as I originally spectulated. Might be only 90% as stated earlier but means the sun burn reason for tinting is out. :D

    So it's all gangsta and thugs life living now. :cool:

    My original lasted about 5 years. It could have gone longer I think because it wasn't pitted that bad, but I had a very small rock chip that magically caused the entire windshield to crack all the way across the bottom one winter. Was out driving around to furniture stores and it was freezing rain out. Wasn't fully warmed up and there was ice buildup on the edges and bottom, had the defrost on high at high heat and all of sudden... After the 30 seconds it took to figure out what the noise was, I was pissed. Now my second one is showing light pitting.

    That pretty much sums it up. Choices are dark as you want in back with 70% or greater up front, or 27% all around (excepting windshield). Except it's not that much of a choice, because on vehicles with factory tint, the backs are usually less than 27% to start, so right off you're at 70% for front.

    There's a tintdude link a couple pages back that sums up states in a little chart. NM is the most lax, I think it's 20% all around there. Or maybe 15% medical reason. FL isn't far behind. There are several states that are 70% all around. WY is 28%, because you know 1% makes a huge difference. The default windshield restriction is 70% here in CO. Note that all these numbers we're throwing out aren't just tint, they're tint plus glass. Which does make a difference.

    The official windshield section, 42-4-227

    (b) Notwithstanding any provision of paragraph (a) of this subsection (1), nontransparent material may be applied, installed, or affixed to the topmost portion of the windshield subject to the following:

    (I) The bottom edge of the material extends no more than four inches measured from the top of the windshield down;

    (II) The material is not red or amber in color, nor does it affect perception of primary colors or otherwise distort vision or contain lettering that distorts or obstructs vision;

    (III) The material does not reflect sunlight or headlight glare into the eyes of occupants of oncoming or preceding vehicles to any greater extent than the windshield without the material.
