    Dear Members,
My wife Shannon and I have an old 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4wd Extra-Cab V6. It is a great family work truck. We have had it for ten years, and we have never done anything to it or poured any money into other than routine maintenance. Yesterday, we thought since it is sixteen years old, and we have never taken down the spare tire that we should do it. Unfortunately, this routine exercise turned up a major problem. The spare tire pulley assembly was missing the notch piece so the spare tire could not be cranked down normally. We ended up cutting the cable to get the spare down, which was quite exciting to say the least. We ended up buying a new assembly at the Toyota dealership, which is due in the shop in a couple of days. The major issue I noticed yesterday was how am I going to get the old assembly out. It has factory round nuts, which can not be removed. Does anybody have any answers?

Are you talking about the piece about the size of a deck of cards that the cable spools in and out of?

If so, on my '03 you had to raise the bed to replace it. It was also a recall item, so check on that. Maybe you'll get your money back on the part and the dealer can do the labor.
