Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

No I went the weekend before. That looks like the run down to Eagle? That area is closed right? Hence why you were able to drive on it?
That's a tiny little tent to fit in the back. I guess the temps aren't too cold there to tent camp nowadays? It was getting down in the 20's when I was there so it was rock hard ice in the am.

 

It sounds like there are a lot possibilities as to where these noises come from.
So far I've talked to two different dealerships and both looked at me like I had two heads and say they have never even heard of this problem, never heard or seen any TSB for the problem. I think they are blowing smoke up my.............

 

yeah its a run just before it crosses the bridge, that area was closed but i still technically shouldn't of been there.

Temps wernt bad, it got down to ~ 28* where i camped at twin lakes that night. A good sleeping bag and i was almost too warm.

 

We had major winds blow through this afternoon so I hit the highway for a bit this afternoon. I have that plastic corner piece removed and I could not get the kazoo noise to happen. I'm 99% that is where it is coming from. So far so good, but I'll keep on listening for it.

 

If in fact you have figured out the culprit kazoo noise I for one am forever thankful!! It has been my only complaint thus far with my 2014. So, do you have an update on the noise coming from the piece of molding? What have you done for a permanent fix?

 

That corner piece was not the answer. Had high winds later that caused the kazoo to reappear. Looks like it is the gasket between the door and A pillar. I haven't had a chance to mess with it. My wife was riding with and said it sounded like it was coming from within the A pillar. I think air gets in there and slaps that rubber flap around somehow.

 

Another MN guy here and with all the wind lately I have noticed some noise coming from the a pillar. Annoying as hell

 

I will post if i get a chance over the next couple days my proposed solution to the problem.

4 pieces of 1/4in outer diameter dripper pipe, 3 long ones in the door seal to add clamping pressure of the seal itself, and a 4th small one between the front fender and the a piller where the two meet.

I feel as though the noise comes from the door seal getting air underneath it at the 3 way intersection of the gap in the body between the door / front fender / a piller

I have yet to confirm this, but i did put my proposed fix into place and will report back if i get into a high wind situation. Again ill get pics if i can over the next couple of days.

The corner piece WAS NOT the solution as stated above.

 

OK here are some pics

Your standard dripper pipe line was used for all of this.... i wanna say its 1/4in OD

First a small 4ish inch section between the top of the front fender and the A pillar.


Next the door, these pics are taken top down inside of the door to the left, outside to the right.
There are 3 pieces of the dripper pipe line, that run the front / top edge of the door. Furthest right is simply set in the void, nothing is really needed to hold it in place.

The middle and left rest in the valleys of the seal (if you look at the seal you will see what im talking about) These two need to be held in place by something, i just used some clear RTV silicone, a TINY dab every 1.5in, lay the pipe in and press down to spread the silicone, this holds the line in place great but i can remove if necessary easily.

 

May help may not but....there's a good chance your antenna is the culprit. I did all the tubing in the under hood molding and taped off the windshield but couldn't get rid of the high pitch whistle. Changed to a shorty antenna and the noise got worse. Took the antenna off completly and it's dead silent now. Hope this helps. It's certainly easy enough to try it.

 

Hey guys, just had my 2013 in for service today and my dealer showed me Toyota's TSB-0144-13 for "whistling noise" from the front grill. My dealer had the replacement seal in stock and changed mine during the service. Check out this TSB and see what you think. I'm super hopeful because the cross wind kazoo noise drives me nuts! My next move is 1/4"OD method (which I have already purchased)

 

completly different noise. This TSB that you quoted applies to the faint tea kettle whistling sound created by the front girl to hood seal on the truck. a 20 cent piece of 1/4in outter diameter dripper pipe line solves the issue described in that TSB.

the Kazoo sound literally sounds like a LOUD kazoo from in the cab.

 

I was at the dealership yesterday for my 10k service. They had my truck sitting on the showroom floor but a 2015 instead of 14. As I was looking it over a salesperson came over and started talking to me about it. She said she owned a 14 in the same truck. I said, "Oh, then you know about the kazoo noise!" She said no. I stold her there is no way she has a 14 DCLB and hasn't heard it. She started back peddling and said the truck was really her husband's and I he hasn't said anything to her about it. Uh huh. Those salespeople sure like to stretch the truth when they think a sale is on the line.

 

my 2012 dcsb does the same thing... once i hit about 75-80 it makes that noise... havent tried to debunk it yet though..

 

Have you had any cross winds to verify the elimination of the annoying kazoo yet?

 

I have not hit any situations that would normally cause the noise after i added the dripper pipe. Ill definitely update the thread when i do.

 

The sound is definitely from the side mirrors. I had extensive hail damage to my 2013 in 2014, and State Farm/ body shop pretty much gave me a new [outside] truck. All the windshield seals, grill stuff, etc. was replaced. The only thing that didn't change was that damn noise from when you're driving at higher speeds (60+ MPH) in wind. It's coming from the side mirrors. I know because I've rolled down the windows and folded the mirrors back, and no more noise. My question is, does Toyota have a fix for this? I bought the best warranty available when I got "Catfish," so I want to know if anyone has had this problem addressed.

 

Does the kazoo sound only occur when it's windy and does it also happen with cross winds? It's simply amazing that there's so many complaints and Toyota doesn't have a fix. Crazy!

 

I've got it in my 10 access cab. Cross winds and high speed equals kazoo. I try opening windows and closing them and that seems to stop it for a while. But it always comes back and it's loud, too.
