also the taco has a steady return to its peak while the 4runner has more of a wave action "float" to it

would the amount of gas in each tank make a difference in the test results?

As far as the fuel pump on/off goes. The ECM needs to see engine rotation signal (NE) from the crank sensor to allow "pump run". During starting an additional signal from the starter relay (STA) "adjusts fuel delivery during starting". It's 9v or better on terminal something or other on the ECM, we discussed this way back and I think "good neighbor tech" (with the death in family) checked it.

ALERTS! what the heck is that?
Never mind, got it. This is like a new car.

Liked that pic you posted DP! Beautiful!! In fact, we may have to move there. Koditten, plans changed, everyone is moving to DP's neighborhood. Hetkind will bring the whiskey barrels....

DP, I remember you posted some awesome Obsidian pics a while back. Here's pics of our hike through Obsidian country in central OR. And Patty & Dolly's matching stride, competing for the lead : )

OK, all mechanics, be honest - is this what really goes on when you test drive cars?

EDIT: If so, I really need to get my butt in school to work for Toyota! That would be some serious fun : )

Are these freeze plugs on the engine block? If yes, they are there to pop out if someone does not use antifreeze. If straight water freezes, it expands and pops these out vs cracking the block.

That's the hope anyways. They don't always work as well as advertised. They can still pop out and the freeze can still crack the block. Little round disks of wishful thinking. Sometimes the freeze can press/dent right on the center of the disk inside,,and roll lock the outside edges to the block so it can't move and pop free.

Just always have good Antifreeze loaded.

Post #4 on this link, the guy says his dad's truck had excessive cranking after 3.4 swap, and it wound up being the igniter. We tried Koditten's igniter already, but I don't know if the Taco was driven with the donor in it at all, or if was just started a few times with the donor in. Would that matter?

And this guy started getting excessive cranking problems on his 5vz after changing his fuel filter........

I am still bothered by the leakdown test results...I found this link:

    http://www.wcengineering.com/articles/leakdown.html

But I think this sentence is important...A freshly rebuilt engine should have less that 4% leak down on each cylinder and if leak down is above 10%, service should be performed. All cylinders should be within 2 percentage points of each other. NOTE: These figures are for performance engines. Stock production engines may have as much as 10% right off the assembly line.

And we saw numbers up to 30%. I think we have valves that are sticking slightly open when warm.

I know this is the wrong year, and wrong engine, but I found this FSB that addressed hard starts. The short version is there is no injector pulse on the first crank, then the second crank the vehicle starts. I believe the fix they are offering is to flash the ECM with updated software, and make sure to label under the hood of the vehicle. I wonder what the firmware update is actually doing/telling the computer?
