Thanks guys! I have over a dozen cans of Fluid Film at home, but haven't thought to spray it on my squeaky fuel door. Just coated the hinge and the entire inside of the fuel door with it last night. It opens smooth as butter now, no squeaking.

I have to say that is one flimsy looking door hinge, better to keep up on it now while the truck is new before rust issues set in.

Just had the fuel door hinge freeze from rust and then I bent the hinge opening it. This was on a '13 with about 32K miles, luckily it was replaced under warranty. And gas was never spilled on it, I do live in the rust belt though. As someone previously stated, they had to order the whole assembly and have it painted prior to install.

Ah damn, mine just rusted off of my '07! I might try to get a welder friend to make new hinge brackets. Has anyone had luck with other solutions besides just buying a whole new fuel door?

You can try welding, but that metal is way to thin, and you need everything perfectly aligned. I would say try it but be prepared for buying new door.

Most drivers aren't that handy or savvy. And they shouldn't have to be. Its 2015 and the world is full of modern materials that wont corrode. People expect that simple things like fill cap doors, like those installed by every other manufacturer, wont rust and fall apart in just a few years. Same goes for frames. Modern materials and coatings have all but eliminated frame rot for every other manufacturer.

No it hasn't, all makes and models of cars and trucks rust.
Really how much effort does it take when you fill up the gas to at least observe what is going on. Dab a little bit of white lithium grease on it every 6 months and call it good.

I live at the ocean, i 4x4 on the beach, my '07 is from here originally.. its no surprise this part rusted for me, but I'm surprised other people have had the same issue. Nothing else on my truck is rusty, and my '88 has no rust problems. If I'd known the fuel door hinge would be a problem, I woulda greased it!

I agree and disagree with you here. I have owned dozens of vehicles. Had plenty of trucks and cars over 300k miles. And you know one thing I have never in my life done? GREASED/OILED MY FILLER CAP LID. NEVER. Never had one rust off, or get stuck in my life. Seems like this is a poor design but at the same time a preventable problem.

The fuel door rusted so fast on my brand new 2010 that I was able to get it replaced under warranty. I recently purchased a used 2013 Taco and it was just starting to show signed of rubbing. Lubed it and it has been OK since. Having said that... I've never lubed the fuel door hinge on any of my other vehicles (going back to the 1980s... many of which were well over 10 years old before I sold them) and never had a problem until the Taco. Even the fuel door on Ma's 2006 Camry was as good as the day it was new when she traded it in last year.

OTOH, I'm not replacing front end parts every other oil change like I was with the Mountaineer.

Just bought a used 2011. The bottom hinge on the fuel door was/is rusting and rubbing. I cleaned it the best I could without doing more damage and put mountain bike grease on it. I know white lithium is the standard auto answer for this, but I like this bike grease better if you don't want to spray the lithium.

mine started to bind and broke off, poor hinge choice IMO

I am going to try some Velcro soon since I don't like it missing

Not sure why people get mad about this. Its the same as never changing your oil and then getting mad at Toyota that your engine seases.

You need to maintain all parts of the truck. If you don't take care of your paint, it will degrade and the underlying metal will rust.

Grease the door regularly and touch up any paint chips.

This is my first Toyota and the first vehicle I have ever had to do maintenance on the fuel door. And trust me I have driven some serious high mileage vehicles that were only kept on the road because of maintenance.

I do hope to keep this truck on the road well past 300K. That's part of the reason I'm here to learn the tips and tricks to do that.

I just replaced mine because i could barely open it. 2012, 94k. It was $99 at a body shop and took them 15 mins to swap out. Whole new door and hinge.

edit: i had the same issue on my 11 while it was under warranty still and toyota replaced it.
