It is a Galopagos Islands Hawk. I used a Samsung 12 megapixel point an shoot pocket camera. As with many species on the Islands, this bird let me walk right up to it. I must have been only about 4 feet away when I snapped the shot. Nothing in it's talons. Just standing on a rock.

Not in the Galopagos. It is so regulated. It was amazing that I got this close, in the first place. I would have spent more than the 6 days in jail I had to spend on my way outta there. One of the ten most corrupt countries in the world. Ecuador.

Finally editing my backlog of photos from a few trips, so I'll have some birdie photos in here shortly.

It's not that corrupt, is it? When'd you go? I've spent a fair amount of time there and it hasn't seemed that bad in my experience. Of course I'm not really interacting with government officials or police...

About 5 years ago. Spent 6 days in jail in the Galapogos. Santa Cruz Island. I was arrested for smuggling. Someone stashed a live Lava Lizard in my bag at the airport. The local rep from the State Dept told me it was one of the top ten most corrupt countries in the world. Year after year.

    That's for sure!

    Damn. Some people, man.
Ehhh I don't know how much I believe that. I just did a search on Countries listed by corruption and Ecuador was ranked 110/175 in 2014 by Transparency International. Not the best, by any means, but certainly not in the worst ten.

couple other pics from that eventful trip.

Difficult to believe that it could have changed that much in five years. But I know from personal experience that corruption was alive and well when I was there. And many other stories came to light after my experience. From a story by CBS in 2009 -
Corruption is on the march. In 2008, the number of countries sinking deeper into the clutches of influence peddling, bribery and scandalous business dealings outpaced improvements by a 2 to 1 margin. Countries falling by more than 10 spots outnumbered risers 8.5 to 1.

Chad leads the way down in this year's report. With a heavy reliance on foreign assistance (mostly for oil exploration and development), the Sudanese neighbor gets black marks for corruption in the ranks of government officials — not surprising given its military dictatorship has been in place for 19 years. No. 2? The Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan, where president Kurmanbek Bakiyev faces mounting opposition brought to a fevered pitch by recent allegations that his administration organized the assassination of a former administration official. Others in the top 10 include Azerbaijan, Venezuela, Cambodia and Ecuador.

I think that our sources are just using different standards in their rankings. But yes, back to the birds. :)

As far as embedding a photo I think you can still do that with the bbcode from whichever website or you can insert the url with the image tags. As far as attaching a photo it looks like you would go through the "upload a file" button between "post reply" and "more options" but I'm not sure beyond that.

    Moar birdies!
My parents and I went out to Anza Borrego in mid-march to see the Swainson's Hawk hordes just north of Borrego Springs. There were records of 600-1000 hawks in the area gorging themselves on these fat sphinx moth caterpillars, but we only saw 5 or 6 individuals, unfortunately. Not sure why they were all roosting the entire day, but it was amusing to watch the few that we saw!

I think my robin is laying her eggs today....the pair were flying back and forth all morning and now she's been sitting on the nest for the last hour or so being very still and has her beak open.

I'm trying to give her some privacy! Sheesh! The boy is back too...standing guard...

I'll try to get some pics if they leave later....I have to go outside and fight my way through the lilac bushes to get a clear view of the nest though so I don't want to disturb them too much.

OK.... I took this through the window so its not a great angle but I don't want to spook her so...just above the green clump of leaves at the bottom of the pic there is a small horizontal branch. Look behind that and you can see the profile of her back/wing/tail....she's facing left
