There is a relatively small hospital about 16 miles from my cabin (about a 30 minute drive).

I see . Do you have to filter / treat the water ?

We installed a 12 000 gal underground rainwater storage tank on one of my builds for irrigation .

I'm going to install a whole house filter on the incoming water before pressure tank.

    Great job op!
I'd do a prefilter and uv lamp on domestic water. You've done an excellent job on everything else.

    Love this thread.

I'm building a 24' x 24' A-frame bunky this summer for a customer, and I'm gonna definitely steal some of the ideas from the banter and exchange of ideas going on here.

One is never too old to learn.

    Some Q's:

    * How far and from where did you have to truck the wood? I only see scrub brush all around.

    * Even if you milled it yourself, did you factor the price of the logs and the transportation into the lumber costs?

    * I am not familiar with cottonwood as a building material. Being from Canada, spruce is the lumber of choice for framing. Is it easy to work with?

Awesome thread, OP... and an even better build!

Well, if I lived out as far as I'd want, I doubt the pizza delivery would deliver to me anyways. I'm currently 7.5 miles from the nearest pizza place and still they refuse to deliver to me.
As far as ammo, I can just head into town myself and purchase it.

    Some A's:

*I only had to truck most of the wood about a mile and a half. Not too far below my cabin is a creek bottom where the cottonwoods grow.

*Price of the logs was free as they were on my land. As far as the fuel for transportation - no I didn't factor that in.

    * Cottonwood seems to be a little tough to work with as far as drilling holes through it to run pipes and wires.

    Thanks for the compliments!

So Cottonwood is a hardwood, or is it a hard to work with softwood?

    Holy f*ck!

Imagine the acoustics in this place. You're building a freakin' piano!

I'm looking for a small wood/coal stove to go in living room corner that won't break the bank. Everything that I'm seeing is huge. Any suggestions?

I have plenty of ammo already.....

Pizza shop in closest town doesn't even deliver in town since the town is so small...

Will this cabin be insured ? An approved woodstove / chimney may be a requirement

I second Oz's statement. What's your price range on the woodstove?

Don't forget that an approved chimney will cost as much or more than the woodstove considering the height of your ceiling and the pitch of the roof. A straight up draw chimney (through ceiling and roof) is always more efficient as it has a better draw, as opposed to one that turns and goes out the back wall, then up the outside of the house. You also can save some money, since you only use a longer run of black pipe in the interior, and a shorter run of exterior insulated pipe. A straight up chimney in an open room also negates the cost of two out of three expensive fixtures.
