Had my first kick back on the tablesaw in about 8 or 9 years yesterday

Launched a 9"x12" piece if 3/4" MDF across my little shop and it went 1/2 way through a piece of 3/4" plywood

    All fingers accounted for

Yikes. I think my infrequent use of the tablesaw makes me extra careful about this sort of thing, especially body position behind the work. Good reminder for us all.

Here is a handy reminder to post in the shop:

My BIL pro finish carpenter is missing most of his ring finger. Which was pretty funny at the wedding a couple weeks ago...

How did the kickback happen? Were you crosscutting? I've had a few things fly across the shop and had a nice bruise across my belt line from some sheetgoods once.

I was crosscutting a piece of MDF in a small space and in a kind of awkward position , long story short I ended up with too much pressure on the outboard piece and the piece I should have been pushing through between the blade and fence bound up , I saw what was happening and took a sidestep and boom it was up onto the blade and behind me in a blink

I've been hit in the guts once before when a cedar shingle I was ripping climbed the blade and came back at me , that was about a decade ago

Trapped crosscut is where I think a lot of people end up hurt.

question for you home improvement guru's....

I want to put up solar screens... I have a brick house with vinyl windows and do not want to drill into either to install the screen holders. Would installing wood or vinyl trim be a good solution? Wood trim would be installed with silicone sealant. These are the screen holders http://www.qualitywindowscreen.com/casement-turn-clips-die-cast-p-20162.html

I wouldn't trust the wood to stay on long using silicone. It will warp.

A mechanical fastener option. Those clips you linked will be the best way to go and use a very small screw. 3 clips on each vertical stile would suffice.

That's why I hate it when people throw scraps of conduit or water line in the trench when you're doing pipe work . Digging up a chunk of electrical conduit later is always an " OH Fuck " moment

    Holy fuck balls. Not OK.

I ran into an orange coated pipe in the exact spot I had to put a massive gate post. Dead center for the entire design in a confined area between structures. It was nowhere near where any gas line should be on the residential property. Meter is on the opposite side of the house, main in the street, I was at the opposite back corner. I had USA in before I had done another excavation, so I knew. Still called PGE, and they said it was abandoned, it was OK to cut ( like I told him I wanted to). OK, so I sawzall through it, nervous as hell. When I cut through it, I could smell residual carbon-based something. I was freaking out a bit, but I was still on the ground in one piece and it wasn't hissing.

Then I get a call a little later. Different guy from PG&E. He says, yeah, I hear you have a pipe that might be abandoned and you need to have it checked out. I say, what the fuck do you mean might? The other guy told me it was abanonded, and I already cut through it! Oh he says....

This was several years before the San Bruno catastrophe. I like to imagine they would be less nonchalant today.

    *Right

This weekend I severely pruned the neighbor's loquat tree back over the fence before it shits it's wealth all over my yard. And I installed the Moen kitchen faucet I bout about 1. 5 years ago...which when I was done I realized one of the sink drain pipes had a minor leak that tightening wouldn't fix...so that's next on the list, along with the sagging cabinet bottom...yippee.
