There is a Snugtop XTR in my near future for my '15 DCSB. However, after reading a couple members describe how their cap is causing the original plastic side rails to crush and move from the weight of the cap, I thought I had the clever idea of simply replacing the factory plastic rails with some KB Voodoo steel rails before adding my cap.

On second thought however, it does appear the original plastic side rails sit much higher (1/4" to 3/8") than the factory front rail, and the factory rear tailgate cap. By adding these KB Voodoo steel rails, I would be bringing down the overall side rail height to now closely match the heights of front and rear.

Anyone have an opinion on whether or not I would be screwing up the intended design fit by SnugTop on a factory bed rail system? I would assume they account for the factory height mismatch, but I'm not sure.

I'm thinking about calling SnugTop direct and asking my question. Has anyone ever tried that? Intelligent customer service?

    Thanks

just based on looks of the voodoo rails, I dont think it would work. The height issue and also the factory rails are rounded and that forms to the fiberglass overhang skirt. I think having a flat piece of metal would dig into the skirt and damage it. (from the pics it looks like it overhangs the bed side in some places) Also, higher chance of the cap coming in contact with the side of your bed damaging the paint on your bedside.

the post in his thread says it will work with caps....

Crushing of the Tacoma bed caps is unheard of at Snugtop. The XTR mounting rails are custom formed to the Tacoma bed. If still in doubt calling Snugtop Technical Support would be a good idea ... ask for Ken.
