Engine has about 130,000 miles on it and started making a really loud knocking noise. I managed to coast into a shop just down the road and the mechanic says it's probably a broken rod bearing. He says that it's best just to get a replacement engine rather than fix it. Soo....

    1. Should I get a new or used engine?

    2. What would be the expected cost from a shop to drop an engine in?

    3. Best places to look for an engine and how do you go about getting it from point A to B?

    4. Is this something I could reasonably undertake myself? I do a lot of work on my vehicles, just did radiator, rack and pinion, suspension and transmission cooler on my Grand Caravan. All pretty straight forward just took a bit longer than a pro would. What special tools beyond an engine hoist are required for such a job?

    5. Do you agree with this guys opinion of getting a replacement VS rebuilding?

Any other things I should consider?

    Thanks,
    Aaron
