I have been considering picking up a spare 1st gen. Instead of buying a brand new truck.

I see that Import Performance sells Tacomas and 4Runners with a diesel swap for around $25,000. It is the size I want and fetches the mileage and torque I am looking for.

    Tacoma Diesel Swap.

I was thinking maybe a 2010+ Nissan Titan. Reasonably sized at 224.6 inches length, 140 inch wheelbase, 79 inch width. Nice 317HP/390 torque V8. Access Cab has a nice padded rear bench and legroom (oddly the Access Cab and Double Cab are the exact same dimensions, but the Access Cab has a 79 inch bed). Fifty inches between the wheelwells.
    http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2010...ed_extended_cab_pickup/2187/packages_options/

The reason I was looking at the Titan was the strong motor for towing, decent size, and the whopping 12.5 inch stock ground clearance with the Pro4x model. The Pro4x comes stock with 33" tires.

Has a 28 gallon gas tank, full leather, 8-way power driver and passenger buckets. Seemed pretty nice on paper. But the front and rear differentials are junk, and horrible MPG. Too bad, looked good on paper.

The perfect Tacoma for me would have 12.5 inches of stock ground clearance, engineered with enough wheelwell clearance to get 33's on it stock. And a 25 gallon gas tank, 49 inches between the wheelwells, a real padded comfortable rear bench in the Access Cab.

It's doable, it's been done before with the GenI Tundra and the Titan and still kept to a reasonable length and wheelbase.

I was sadden to see the standard cab with it's shorter wheel base discontinued. I get there is not the market compared to the smoother riding longer trucks. But, I would like to see the 4 Runner return to it's roots and ride on that shortened WB with a full cab and FJ type doors. Off road animal in both 4 cylinder and six and selling for under $30k, it would be amazingly agile and still seat four with folding rear seats. I would buy one in a heart beat...me and three other guys probably. But, we fat ass American just won't buy enough in volume to make it worthwhile. Poop ! My first choice when buying new this last year and replacing my older 4Runner was a new 4 Runner...until I decided it wasn't worth the extra $7000 to me over a Taco. But that is what I would buy if I had the money.

Well, I went though this a couple months ago. I didn't want a full size truck. I traded in my Colorado for the Tacoma and I didn't want another Colorado. The Dodge and Nissan are butt ugly. Ford doesn't make the Ranger any more. I want a truck that I don't have to clime to get into the bed. My Tacoma fits my criteria.
But, if I did not buy the Tacoma, I'm not sure what else there is in the mid size group of trucks that I would like. I would probably buy a Tundra or an F 150 even though they are bigger than what I want because nothing else satisfies my needs. With out the Tacoma, I guess I'd go large.

Edit note. Top 13 trucks sold in America.

You don't have to sit there and watch the frame rust. I live in the salt belt and once a year, spray biodegradable motor oil through a garden sprayer onto the frame ....takes about ten minutes to do. If you are really ambitious, take a foam brush and "paint" red grease or any wheel bearing grease onto areas you suspect. A yearly inspection and an hour's time and spraying inner body panels too and nothing on your truck will rust....ever ! I do it to all my vehicles including a Chevy truck I use to own. Needless to say, rusted frames or rust anywhere on cars 15 yeas old in the rust belt never happens. Our cars are worth thousands more come tradedin time with no rust. In GA, you could treat the truck once every three to five years and never worry.Btw, we didn't see temps above 6 degrees for the entire month of February and salt covers our roads and cars 5 to 6 months out of the year.

Got rid of my 06 Tacoma SR5 V6 4x4 for a 10 Frontier King cab Pro-4x 6spd. I can't believe I never considered the Nissan in the first place, great truck so far. It has all of the little things the Tacoma was missing.

A fuck ton of excess weight, terrible interior, and an engine that's going to milk shake the moment you try to flush the transmission.

    Boxed frame
    Heated mirrors
    Side window defrost vents
    Height adjustable drivers seat
Stronger tail gate and leaf springs
One piece aluminum rear drive shaft
    Stock 265/75R16 tires
    Fuel economy and dte readout

It's much quieter and smoother, The visibility is excellent in comparison. I miss the rocker panel ground clearance and storage bins in the Tacoma but really not much else. Hard to say that as a long time Toyota driver and fan.

All good points. Except I'm not one that cares much about a fully boxed frame on a quarter ton. Use some good steel and there's no need to box the back half given the lower payloads on our trucks. All the extra weight isn't worth it IMHO.

I just hope Nissan actually does a ground up redesign or at least a major refresh of the Frontier before they throw the Diesel in it. The current Frontier looks terrible inside and out IMHO.

Pretty much how mine looks. I'm not a fan of the crew cab or lower trim levels. Interior is bland but everything fits nicely and all of the materials match. I didn't think the boxed frame was a big deal but it sure feels solid, no jiggly feeling that the Tacoma always had. It feels like the old (pre '95) Toyotas I drove for years.

It irritates me that Toyota does very little to no updating on the content side. If you want to continue to sell a 10+ year old design fine, but at least keep it competitive on the content side/offerings. There is no reason why they couldn't have added/offered heated mirrors, offer leather trimmed heated seating (other than the limited) and add dual VVT-i on the V6 to match the HP and Torque output of the Nissan Frontier.

If it weren't for the fact that Nissan dropped the optional manual transmission on the Frontier Pro-4X crew cab I would have bought one. Looking back I'm glad I got the Tacoma instead since it's significantly easier to buy after market mods for a Taco than a Frontier, which also explains why I've been so broke since buying my Tacoma

Well, my F150 is on order and delivery eta is 6/14. I really hope that comes sooner. So ready to try some of the features Toyota doesn't feel like offering.

Thanks. The Tacoma suited my needs for a while, but I realized many things would be easier and safer in a full size. Needs and desires change. lol I loved manuals, waited for the Tacoma to be offered with one again, and now I'm looking forward to an automatic. haha

I bought a new 2015 GMC Canyon. I waited for Toyota to debut the new Tacoma before making my decision, but Toyota did not address all the issues with the new Tacoma that I wanted. After driving the new GMC for 2,000 miles it would be hard to go back to a Gen 2 Tacoma. It has so many additional features that the Tacoma doesn't I won't even attempt to list them all. Loved my Tacoma, but it was time for a change.
