I am back to pulling a TT after a 25 year break from RVs. I recently purchased a 3600 lb trailer, and a pro-series WD hitch with friction anti-sway. After talking to the tech about the anti-sway, he convinced me to only use it when necessary. I have now pulled the TT about 600 miles in the last couple of weekends without the sway attachment, and so far, even in noticeable gusty winds the trailer was very smooth and didn't bounce around, even on some rough concrete freeways (at 60-65max).
When do you guys recommend attaching the anti-sway? The tech mentioned that they can be dangerous if you neglect to take it off when backing the trailer...which I do a lot.

You have it, so use it. :)

What are the length and height dimensions of the TT?

Do you travel in windy areas?

Does the WD hitch manual say anything about backing up with the hitch?

Personally, I'd want all the help I can get from my hitch when towing. You never know when you'll really need the sway control.

    1) length = 19' (22 including hitch), height = 9'
    2) yes, I have so far with no TT instability.
    3) Manual says sway control MUST be removed when going in reverse.

It is always ready for installation. Perhaps I will try it on the next trip to see how it handles with it on. I really wanted the WD, don't really have an opinion on the sway, because I have never been in a situation where I thought it would help. Then again, as you said, you never know when you'll need it until too late...hindsight is always 20-20.

The friction anti sway can bind and be damaged if used while backing up. If you're forgetful and it handles fine, don't use it. Try it out though and see if it helps first, pass some big trucks on the freeway and stuff, see if it feels like it's doing anything for you. Probably not really needed on a small trailer.

It's recommended to disconnect the sway when backing because the sway control can be damaged due to the increased stress placed upon it by turning too sharp. I don't bother using mine around town when I'm bring my RV home from the storage yard but I do use it when hitting the highway or freeway. When I get to my camp site, I remove the clips and pull it off before backing into my camp site.

I believe the Equalizer brand WD/anti sway hitch can be used in reverse. At least I did when I had one for a 10,000lb. toy hauler. Never gave me an issue and the only time I unhooked the sway control was when I unhooked the trailer.
