i have a Fj cruiser but i want a pick up , a Toyota and i found 2 tacomas: a 4x4 ,4 doors but with a rusty frame and a pre runner in excellent condition....

So the question is : A Pre Runner works in a light off road?

    Thanks

Yes, there are many off road scenarios where I don't even put my truck into 4x4. A prerunner will be perfect as long as you stay out of the mud/sugar loose sand

A Pre Runner should be OK for light off-roading (define light?). A winch and/or a companion with a 4x4 and recovery straps would be better.

I've been offroad many times. I've never had a problem. Use your head and make smart decisions and you won't either.

Just to give you my perspective. I bought a double cab shortbed prerunner. midwest winters made on-road driving a pain in the butt, with the light backend. The sandbags helped, but they were nothing compared to my 4x4 i traded in for last winter.

I'm not saying you need a 4x4; but if you're like me, you'll end up criticizing your decision, until you finally trade it in for the 4x4. Just my experience.

I'm a little south of the previous poster, but have had several decent bouts of winter weather since I bought my Prerunner. In '09, traction control/abs/vsc/brake assist became standard. I often just shovel snow into my bed when i'm shoveling the driveway, and that provides plenty of extra weight on the rear wheels (and it melts away when not needed anymore).

My 'off road' experience is really just on minimum maintenance roads, so I can't speak to real off-roading. When I replaced the OEM tires i went with Dynapro ATM, and have been very happy with the muddy and snowy performance.

Mine does great. Never been stuck besides one time I slid into a ditch going too fast round a corner on a dirt road. Like other people have said. Make smart choices and know your limits and you won't have any problems. Also helps to know wether the bottom of a mud hole is hard or soft.

At some point you're going to wish like hell you bought a 4x4. Just do it up front and get it over with. There are plenty of PreRunner converted to 4x4 threads, but none going the other way. There is good reason for that.

On Jan 27th this year I bought a 2015 DCLB V6 auto Pre Runner after having a 2006 Chevy 4x4 and a 2008 GMC 4x4. Thought I could be satisfied with 2wd. WRONG! On March 28th traded for a new DCSB TRD Off Road V6 auto and could not be happier.

I love the looks of the Pre Runners because they sit high like a 4wd but I do spend some time off road hunting (mud and sand and rutted out roads). I also tow my boat and some boat ramps are slippery or steep. 4wd and if needed low range are an advantage. At the end of the day I find that the 4wd suits my needs better.

Just depends on what you want to do with a truck. For me, I chose the prerunner b/c I have no need for a 4x4.

I've never had a problem and i have offroaded a lot. It's just common sense making the right judgement decisions on the terrain you're wheelin on.Yes a 4x4 obviously gives the obvious.More.I don't have enough need for a 4x4 yet i'm very happy having a prerunner with the offroading capabilities i've had with it before and a lot more to occur in the future.

the thing i have found with 2wd vs 4wd is. Ill find myself feeling MUCH more confident in going out and exploring. Ill play in 2wd and if i get stuck or cant make it, Flip to 4x4. If i find something i cant make it in 4x4 .... then atrac gets turned on.... then if that dont work the rear locker.

If you really want a prerunner.... get a TRD off road so you at least have a rear locker.
