That must have been a bear to make ...I can't imagine the hours that went in to getting that wood to do that. Did you wet the hell out of the upper and lower pieces that overhang the head boards?

I pre-made all my heads and sills out of second hand material. Most of what I used was 1940's yellow pine built from shelves in my garage that was arrow straight. I left imperfections in in even after I routered it. I wanted the feel that the house was built around old trim from a previous house....wow that sound weird even typing it:)

    Cool .

I was able to make the narrow elements of my trim build up from a VG Fir strip floor I took out of a house built in 1942 I was renovating for a client , most of the rest of my window and door material came from some wide flooring that was rejected by another contractor because it had been mis-milled and the tongues and grooves didn't fit correctly , I just milled them down into sizes I needed

Most of the things I used in the inside of my new house are either waaaay older or rejects. I completly understand. By the way you are a true craftsman. My stuff was budget oriented, but I did the best I could.

Sorry for the late reply, I was super busy this weekend and didn't check this thread but thank you, I am very happy with the install.
I don't mind sharing the cost, it was definitely not cheapest system I was quoted. Total for the HVAC equipment & install was $6329.00. I also bought and 1550 cfm Attic Breeze solar powered exhaust fan to pull the hot air out of the attic. That was an extra $811.00 (minus a $300 tax credit at the end of the year) for a grand total of $7140.00. The attic fan has has not been installed yet, that is schedule for this coming Friday and I will post a pic or 2 once its done.
I had been putting off the new system for the last 2 years due to the high cost, 3 break downs last summer and we started this one off completely out of freon due to a rusted out evaporator coil. When you live in Texas having good AC is a must, we might be skipping our summer vacation this year but now that the new equipment is installed and the check has been handed over I am relieved to know that it's good to go for awhile.

I am still considering my options for an insulation upgrade. I like the idea of the open cell spray foam but after forking over the money for the new system I might need to let my wallet recover until next year. Do you mind if I ask you how much it cost you? Maybe via PM? If nothing else I will rent the machine and blow in another layer of the loose batting, still not sure. I have spending what little free time I have had over the last few days making full height solar screens for all of my exterior windows to reduce the heat & light coming into the house. I am not sure if it actually helps to save energy like they claim but it "seems" to make it feel cooler in the house.

I did check with my power company (which is city owned) and they are not offering anything, since there are no state income taxes in Texas I doubt that will pan out. I hadn't considered checking for a federal incentive however and will definitely look into it. Thank you for the idea.

It didn't cost me as much as it should have... I asked the rep/salesman to NOT block out the soffits, I told him I'd do that part. I wanted them to thermal bridge with a quick shoot across the rafters once the R-value was achieved and DO NOT apply fire resistant paint to the foam once completed (I didn't apply for a permit), so nobody knows the work is being done, he didn't mind that and everyone involved was cool with it. I paid about $3,100.00 for the foam application.

I used to work in the high end construction biz (http://www.kenvona.com/), so I have familiar resources to talk to for pricing.

Food for thought, If you don't insulate the entire attic, you're not conditioning the area of your air handlers and ducting.... Applying additional blown-in to the attic floor is ok, but that does nothing for the goal of conditioning the attic.

Check this out, before we had central air and no foam insulation, the attic would roast during the day and when dusk/night came around, we'd have to go outside to keep cool as the heat contained in the attic would bake-down into the living areas of the house.... that fucking sucked. Now, I can go in the attic on the hottest of days and NOT break a sweat up there thanks to the conditioned space.

I can only tell you my experience and suggest to you that foaming your attic will be money well spent.... and that's no bullshit.

This company, among many others in the area, do things the right way..

I'm by far no expert but you could go the traditional route of masonary mollys and screws or maybe a few U shaped hangers that would attach to the boxes and go over the top of the wall. Atleast that way you wouldn't have any holes in your wall..Just throwing it out there...

Deduct your labor cost from your taxes at least. "Time spent looking for business," aka, business development. LOL.
