ARP Head-Header Studs

    Would like to make a note about the install of these studs, on all '05+ 1GR's.

    Recently I found out something of interesting importance. The heads on the '03-'04 1GR, have holes for the studs which can be easily finger tightened. As they should be.

    However, on the '05+ heads, the holes are of a tighter tolerance. Upon inspection of studs from both year models next to each other, they were the same size. It seems that the heads of the '05+ were either heated before the studs were installed, or the studs were chilled, to make the fit extremely tight, once the head and the studs were of the same temperature.

    So, in order to properly install these into the '05+ heads, a tap with teh dimensions of 8mm x 1.25 pitch, with some grease added into the grooves, is necessary to properly install these without fault or problem.

    Or you could take it to the extreme and put the arp studs in the refrigerator overnight. Then carefully use a micro torch to heat up each stud hole one at a time then insert refrigerated stud with grease. Just a thought, but then open flame in the engine bay, oh boy.

    i have the 2.4l 2002 tacoma. im planing on putting boost on it and im looking for arp head studs but im having a hard time finding them. can anyone set me in the right direction?

    Pull one of those studs out, and find out its length, diameter, and pitch.

    Dezod can get them for you. The ones for the 2nd gen 1GR Tacoma are 8mmx1.25 by I think 40 mm long. *** Those are specifically for the head to header. ***

    Also, Dezod can get you a Cometic head-gasket. They can possibly get you the Head Studs as well. Currenty, they have the best price on head studs for the 1GR.

    The Cometic head gasket is labeled as an "MLS Head Gasket". Otherwise know as a Multi-Layer steel.

    +1 & Thanks for the write up and tips. Mine are in the mail from Dezod and Ill be grabbing a tap before install.

    any tips for a 1gfre swap? Not looking to 'build' anything...my current engine is fubar and getting ready to swap out the old for a new one I got. Figured there was no way I was reusing my 6yo manifolds or studs so thats how I found this thread.

    I ordered some about 6 months ago. They were hard to track down. It was said that they would fit my truck on the site. They didnt. Not with the stock headers. The intention was to change the studs now and the headers when i got to them. The stock headers are a different thickness where the air injection ports are. But this also means that they wont fit some other aftermarket headers. The studs need to be longer in that location. I was not very pleased so i sent them back, then was charged a $30+ restocking fee.....for 12 tiny studs. I was not pleased one bit. Just putting this out there so someone else doesnt suffer the same fate. Probably won't buy from them again just because of the additude given to me on the phone and the ridiculous restocking fee.

    Wow. Who did you get them through?

    So you're saying that the OEM studs on the '12+ models are longer than the ARP studs?

    For the record, the ARP studs are the same ones used for the Scion tC.

    Also I would like to add that URD also sells ARP flywheel bolts. As the OEM ones are torque to yield and should be replaced one removed.

    Yeah, I ordered them through Dezod Motorsports. I received 12 studs of equal length (with matching nuts) which seemed normal enough, but when I started taking the stock ones out, I found that the top 3 on each cylinder bank were much longer than the bottom three. The thickness of the header flange on top was way thicker due to the air injection. The ARP studs I received were all the same length as the bottom studs and therefore unusable. So basically it was a bunch of money wasted (restocking fee and shipping). It was listed as fitting my year vehicle on their website and it didn't. I don't see them listed on the site anymore though.

    What a shame, sorry to hear about the issue. At least you have done a service for others, since they aren't the same though.

I didn't come back on here and say anything when it happened cause I figured there was no need to give bad press for a company where a lot of us on Tacoma World do successful business at. After seeing the conversation get started up again I figured I would give some information I had learned and hope it helps someone else.

    I know that the ones for up to the '08 model works for ours. They are a little longer than ours.

    Just remember, the threads need to be hit with a thread chaser or flat ended tap. As the '05-'11 heads have a slightly tighter tolerance.
