I recently had the frame recall done, in addition to leaving out the leaf springs, they didn't seem to think that the spare tire holder rusting half way through was something that should have been taken care of with the rest of the frame.

Id like to take care of this before the spare tire is bouncing down the highway at 70mph.

Has anyone tackled replacing this part? Anyone have the part numbers or any info on how to fix this?

    Includes is some pictures....

    Thanks

I got no love from the Toyota dealership, its not part of the frame recall. I got the part number, but at $50 plus $40 shipping, it would have been the same as the dealership. Ebay would have been about $50 for a used, that was only a bit better.

I took a wrench and checked to see how hard it would have been to remove, but figured it wasn't worth the effort. Spacing is tight and the bolts barely moved, I just decided to just paint it in place.....

First wire brushed the spare and painted it with anti-corrosive paint.....

Then wire brushed and painted the spare tire holder.....

Then I greased the bolts on the winch with anti seize compound....

Then finished off by greasing the cable with some heavy duty bearing grease....

Not sure how long this repair it will last up here in New England, or that I won't eventually have to replace it, but at least it looks like I have a shiny new spare tire....

This is probably something that should get checked every spring, its hard enough having to get to the tire for a roadside repair. It wouldn't be fun to find out the spare tire hoist was seized up.

Sorry to hear that replacing it was so expensive, that's ridiculous if you ask me. I've only had my truck a year and a half and I make sure to check the spare periodically to make sure it's full of air, not rusted, not seized up, etc. what year is your truck if you don't mind me asking?

Its a 2005, in pretty good shape with the frame recall and all.

The weak link in the cable hoist like you have is the crimped on connector that holds the spare support that you painted. They have been known to corrode and come apart at the crimp.

They have since gone back to the chain type holder for the trucks as they were years ago, which is much better IMO.

Any idea if you can buy one that is compatible with the 2005 mount points?

When did they do this? I have not seen any with the chain. I would prefer to have the chain rather than the cable.

Can anyone with a 2015 verify this?

I have a 2013 and can confirm I do have the chain type spare tire holder.

I'm surprised it did as good as it did living 10 years in New England, surprised it wasn't just missing when you went under there!

Wonder if I can upgrade my cable to that chain?

    That's what I am thinking.

Does anyone with a 2013 or newer in the DC, northern VA area want to meet up for a few minutes to determine if this can be installed in a pre2013?

I'll buy the first rounds of drinks!

Please post what you find out, Id probably end replacing my cable hoist with a chain version if it was compatible.

well I called the dealer and was inquiring about cost of a new hitch and spare tire carrier and I was told they replace the carrier as part of the frame replacement. So I'll have to pony up for the hitch but get a new spare tire carrier. It would be awesome to get the chain though instead of the cable.

It looks the same in terms of how it connects to the frame. It should fit from what I was able to look up online.

If you can get one as part of the frame replacement awesome, but both my local Toyota Dealer and a call to Toyota USA Corporate said the Spare Tire Hoist was not something that gets replaced as part of the recall.
