It was a requirement for us to graduate. I recommend taking it during college because it's pretty general and you'll not use/forgot a lot of the stuff that's not applicable to your discipline after you graduate

Mechanical Engineering. Worked in accident reconstruction, on Airbags and seatbelts for Ford, and turbochargers for Honeywell. Well, the last one was more in sales. Not in the field any more though.

Search baja Sae on google and a bunch of stuff will come about it and explain what it's all about. Basically it's a club on campus where you and a team of dudes design and build a single seater mini baja car.

As others have said, make the time to take it your senior year if not required by the school. Also, I solely used the following website for studying (along with the reference manual - know that shit inside and out) and passed without an issue. This one was focused on Civil Engineering, but has a bunch of general videos that will definitely help you out. Recorded and available for free from Texas A&M University.

I took the FE/EIT my lest semester in school. Wasn't a requirement to graduate, but it was strongly recommended if you were staying within the field of Engineering. 2 more years till my PE! :yay::goingcrazy:

I wasn't part of the SAE/Baja team, but my school had a pretty kickass team. I helped a tiny bit with the steel bridge and concrete canoe projects though.

We run a planetary drivetrain and 4-arm cvt that has been very successful for us in the last few years. The most current car has full carbon fiber body panels. This last year, since I had graduated but still wanted to be involved, I built them a wireless data acquisition system that communicated via 900MHz Trio radios back to a base station at our pit station. It relayed information about the car such as rpm, speed, various temps, and fuel level. It also gave a button to the driver to press if he needed to pit the next lap and would set off a siren at our pit station so everyone was ready and waiting for him to come around. We also had the same function just in reverse from the pit station to the driver to tell him when he needed to pit for gas or other various things.

Definitely take the FE/EIT while you are still in school. I took it at the end of my junior year and still easily passed without having even learned a few of the topics on the test yet. Preparation ahead of time is key though. I agree with what others have said about studying ahead of time with various materials.
