    Hey Ya'll,

    So, maybe about a month ago I tested out my snorkel by running through a pool. Everything went well except for the fact that the next day there was a whining noise in my engine compartment. I have been tearing about the idler bearings one by one, thinking that sediment might have gotten into them. They were dirty but after scrubbing them down and re-greasing them, the noise still persists.
    The noise sounds like it is coming from the belt area but I cannot figure out what it could be besides the idler pullies.
    Does anyone have any idea of what this noise could be and how to make it go away? It is driving me crazy!

    I am uploading it now... it's taking a while.

    It's a little hard to hear over the fan but when I use the stethoscope at idler two it sounds like a bearing grinding. Also, the sound follows the speed of the the RPMs.

    Edit: ok it's not working right now and I have to get to class. I will post a recording a bit later.

    once a bearing has been infected with dirt its done.... replace it competently.

    This is also why i stay out of mudholes with my 34k$ truck.

    exactly this.

    You may see pictures and videos of mudders and snorkeling but you don't see the other
    99% of that...which is when you get back, it goes on a lift, wheels come off, body panels off,
    and gets a complete teardown of everything and it is -all- taken apart, cleaned, regreased
    and lubed for the next adventure

    brake calipers come off, all that cleaned out, drums off, wheel bearings....the whole shnizzle



    you cannot play in the mud 100% without hours of follow-up maintenance or
    you'll ruin the vehicle.

    I seriously don't understand the hostility on this forum some times. I bought my truck to build and use as an overland vehicle not just keep it spic'n'span on the paved roads. I am not interested in heavy mudding or sinking my truck. I don't have any friends that are into off-roading so the only source of info I have is the one local shop near me, the internet and forums like this.

    I will try replacing the pulley then. I am not sure if you were trying to say "completely" or if you were intending to say "competently" as though I am not being competent.

    I am glad to hear that you are staying out of mud holes with your $34k truck. I am also glad that I only paid nearly half that for mine.

    As I said above, I don't plan on going heavy mudding or snorkeling all the time but, when I do, I am not afraid of cleaning it either.

    All I was trying to do was get information, and I might have gotten that, but the reason I waited so long to even ask the question is because I don't want to deal with righteous, judgmental responses like these.

    not being judgmental.

    it could be anything in there that is making noise. any moving part. not going to
    suggest a large list of crap. I am gonna suggest THE thing to do which is
    complete maintenance

    your pic that thing is underwater. doesn't matter heavy or light mudding, you went
    in there deep

    there is no 'oh well I don't do it all the time' that's like only being half-pregnant
    you went in there....therefore it won't come out all shiny and new will it ?

    people who do this all the time, saddle-up and do the extreme maintenance

    if you put it on a lift and tore it all apart you'd find the friggin problem
    that was my point. play in the mud --you will need to go in and clean up stuff--

    cripes.

    replace the idlers for sure.

    They are known to ingest water and get like that

    Well yea! These trucks aren't military vehicles. I would never think about doing this on purpose unless I had deep pockets.

    These alternators are notorious for the whine after they get wet. Listen around the alternator with a mechanics stethoscope and see if that is the source.

    I was wondering the same thing.

    I finally received the parts that I ordered and replace the lower #2 idler first. That was the problem. As I was taking it off I could tell that it was loose even while it was tightly bolted to the block. I did replace the #1 idler since I had already ordered it and I was doing the work.

    I finally used the truck yesterday after doing the work and there was absolutely no sound.
