I drive my in-law's FJ all the time and I have a 2013 Double Cab 4x4. I would never trade the truck for the FJ, however, if I had an access cab 2wd 4cyl I would trade that for the FJ in a heartbeat. The FJ gets close to 20 mpg's with 10ply 32's and mixed driving. I find it lots of fun to drive but I like/need the extra room I have in my truck.

Have you considered a double cab long bed? You're still getting the upgrade to extra seating, v6 power and 4wd. There are lots of people with lots of miles on these trucks and no one really has a problem with the 4wd selector to my knowledge. My in-law's FJ on the other hand sometimes will not shift into 4wd no matter what you yell at it.

Can't go wrong with any of them though.

Went from driving a 2010 DCLB 4x4 Taco to a 2012 4x4 FJ auto (couldn't find a manual anywhere). Love the smooth ride of the FJ, haven't had an opportunity to take it offroad yet. Looking forward to that, though. I miss having the bed, but for what little bit of pulling I do the FJ gets the job done just fine.

This has been a fun to read thread. I am currently looking for an FJ, being patient to find the right one with the lowest mileage possible, while still trying to find a relatively good price. I have liked them since they came out, and finally test drove one last year and have pretty much been focused on the FJ. I have a 93' V6 pickup and always wanted a Taco, but after driving the FJ I have pretty much pushed the Taco aside. I hav heard nothing but great things about the FJ. I'm sure I will miss the bed of my truck, but I bought a camper cover for it a while back and kind of did away with the convenience of the open hauling of the bed. I will say that with the FJ hauling a kayak will be much harder by myself and will have to look into getting a small trailer for the kayak (not a big issue).

I have heard from several as well that they feel that the FJ has a bit more zip to it than the Tacos do, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me seeing as how it looks like it is heavier.

I will keep on eye on this thread and update if I make a purchase.

I have owned both. I had an 07 Taco, and currently drive a 2012 Fj Cruiser. Both had 4wd, the taco lacked any other performance accessories, my Fj is loaded. The Fj is far superior to the Tacoma off road. The Tacoma became a lot more of a truck this generation. The frame is loose, which reduces ride quality off road, and reduces steering accuracy. It also strengthens the frame. The steering felt numb. Visibility over the hood is awful. The suspension travel was poor. Both saw a 3"ish suspension lift. Even after adding aftermarket suspenion, I was still dissapointed in the ride quality on the Tacoma. The tailgate was cheap, and bent. I was never happy with it, but I had little need for a pickup truck. It was an impressive truck though. It hauled, pulled, and could be relied on. It has a fantastic engine, it pulls from very low RPM. The bed is no wider than previous Tacomas, even though the vehicle is bigger. The Fj is fantastic off road. the opposite of the Taco: better hood visibility(poor everywhere else), outstanding suspension travel, fantastic steering with no understeer(manual transmission w AWD helps), rigid frame and body, heavy duty drivetrain, locking center and read diff, better clearance at the bumpers and door panels, better approach and departure angles, the list of plusses goes on and on.
If you want to go offroad, get the Fj. If you need a truck bed for offroad use, compare the Tacoma to other trucks, inlcuding the previous version of the tacoma. If you need a good truck, get the Tacoma!

I'm currently looking for an FJ for the wife (that's what she wants). I found a base 4x4 without all the bells and whistle. Planning on adding a 3 inch lift and AT tires we don't off road a lot just mainly beach runs. This one is a 13 with 22k for 33.5 is this a fair price. Also found a loaded out one with all the goodies and then some for 38 and 14k miles. Any input?

Unfortunately, prices have spiked in recent months. I'd keep looking for the one you want and you may score one for less.
Check out the classifieds in the "Blue Room" too.

Question to you FJ owners. I am also currently looking to sell my Reg Cab Tacoma and gain a back seat. I have started looking at an FJ. I'm going to be transporting a little one in it. Anybody have a car seat in their FJ's? Are they easy to get to or should I look into the 4Runners?

FWIW I consider my access cab taco a two seater but I'd imaging the FJ has a little more room.

Its bad enough when you have a full grown adult getting out in a tight parking lot... the Suicide doors only open 70% of the way so you are left standing in a triangle between the inside of your doors and the car next to you... Love my FJ, but I will probably get something different when its time for a car seat in my life.

Had three Tacoma's and longed for an FJC. Two years ago wife supported my decision to get an FJ. Was a great vehicle but a month ago I went back to a 2015 TRD Off road. nuff said.

Im probably about to get shunned for this but I've always compared to FJ to more of a Jeep, where the Jeep wins in my eyes... But I wanted another truck so taco was a easy choice!

Just get a crew cab Taco. It's cheaper, rides and handles better and is quieter. The FJ stinks as a daily driver unless you compare it to a Wrangler....then it's a Caddy.

The fjs should ride way better: rear coil springs vs leaf springs.
