My dad bought a 1995.5 Tacoma SX 4x4 2.7l new. It has 294,400 miles on it. Runs perfectly fine and is completely stock. I want to put money in the truck (lift, tires, rims, paint, etc) but I do not trust the engine. We are looking to put in a new engine or rebuild the one it has now.

Please tell me the pros/cons of each.

If anyone has done a rebuild how much was it?

Does an engine run like new with a rebuild?

Has anyone put in a new engine?

    How much was it?

    Thanks

I'd go with a good rebuild. Get your engine rebuilt at a good machine shop. If you see Ferrari and other exotic engines that are worth big $s you will know it's a good shop. I've had engines rebuilt at a shop like that and they were better than a new engine. Rebuilt engines from a mass re-builder are iffy, they mix up the parts from different engines and don't balance them and who knows what else.

To get an engine rebuilt at a shop like I'm suggesting you have to take it out and put it in. The shop I've used would assemble it for you or you can assemble it yourself. I assembled my engines myself.

I would not trust a rebuilt engine from any of the big parts chains. And engine from NAPA might be ok.

It's been 10+ years since I rebuilt an engine so I don't know current prices. Machine shop prices in Seattle varied by 2 times. The less expensive shop did better work.
