I was struggling loading a push mower(heavy one) into my bed today by myself. So i dropped the tailgate, hopped on it, and stood the mower straight up using the handle to try to lift it in. Well, i ended up gouging the damn paint on my tailgate. Big ugly scratch. Tried buffing it out, but it was too deep and ended up going through the clear. So i ended up removing the tailgate and dropped it off at a friends for a re-paint. Im just looking on the bright side since now all the other minor scratches will be fixed and ill have a perfect tailgate. So the lesson i learned, dont be a hero, ask for help.

On my last truck I did something similar. Was trying to lift something into the bed that I had no business trying to lift by myself. Ended up putting a nice 4-5" long scratch in the tailgate. It definitely sucks but these things will happen.

I know this is a truck, not a ferarri. I just like to keep my vehicles nice, and once i scratch it, my eyes will be drawn to it like a magnet.

I hear ya there. I think my wife gets tired of me telling her to be careful around the truck. The paint is really prone to getting scratched.

Where on the tailgate is the scratch? If it's near the top, my tailgate cap might cover it up.

i like the badges. I am actually concerned about RE-BADGING properly. I should use 3m automotive tape, right? I took pics of the factory badge placement, but i may have to ask you guys for percise measurements. I have "toyota tacoma", v6, and SR5.

I did the exact same thing not too long ago so I feel your pain. I have to always remind myself to take extra time and do things properly.

Well the damage is now fixed. The tailgate has been repainted. Its in better shape now then when i got the truck, as it already had some minor scratches. I got some new badges at the dealer, my friend who did the tailgate said putting my old badges on with 3m tape would have looked shitty. you can also see the color matched bumper that i replaced the chrome one with. Now my offroad is a little unique.

Seems strange that members are scratching up their tailgate, when the painted portion is actually facing down towards the ground when dropped.

the scratch was on the middle, about 2 inches below the top plastic liner. Yes the tailgate was down, but i was standing on the gate, pulling the mower up. A piece of the mower somehow caught the paint and gouged it.

I must be a little weird in the sense that scratches and such don't bother me. Cost of doing business. I would be bothered by a dent, or by something broken - glass, headlight, what have you - but scratches, faded paint, that sort of thing I could care less about. I buy my shit to use it.

But I also like a gun with the bluing all worn off, and a motorcycle with the frame rubbed raw around the footpegs and the grips rubbed smooth, so I'm strange.
