Lurker thinking about buying a Tacoma. Deals to be had right now?

Hello friends! I am thinking about buying a Tacoma. I am currently in a Focus and am getting the itch and missing my 2002 4Runner more and more every day.

Is the 4 Cylinder really doggy? A dealer around me has a new one with a manual and the SR package for around 25,500. I drove it and liked it. Is that an okay deal? As a long term proposition does anyone with a 4 cylinder wish they had just sprung out for the V6?

Also, what might a person expect off of MSRPs right now with the 2016 coming out? I am thinking more base level even though the only option I want is a locker (Damn you Toyota for putting it in the most expensive package!).

I have noticed the EPA has the Manual V6 rated lower than the automagic. Is that actually the case if you compare them head to head?

Anyways, hopefully one way or another, I will end up with a Tacoma sometime soon. :D

    Welcome to TW!
You will be amazed here with how much you can spend on your Tacoma.
Our questions to you will be:
What do you want the Taco for? Just a car to get to work? Towing? Four-Wheeling? How many people do you want to be able to carry? Do you need it to carry a heavy load? Do you just want new? Do you want it to look bling, or look off-road?
The Tacoma is near the top in all vehicles in re-sale value. New ones don't normally come with any great deals on price.
    I believe a 4 door V-6 4WD TRD would be about $30,000.
If you live on flat terrain, don't tow or go rock climbing, and love better mileage, then a 4 banger would be good for you.
4 bangers get around 21-22, and the V-6 gets around 18. This all changes when you do any changes to the vehicle.
Check out Consumer Reports on what prices the Tacoma should be selling at. Go armed with the data to a few dealers and get them to bargain.
Dont take anything for granted, such as the seats. Different models have different seats. Check out the vehicle completely before deciding on THAT one.
If you want a locker, then its the TRD Off-Road for you. But remember, you can get a much better locker to add-on to a vehicle you pick later.
The best selling one seems to be the 4 door V-6, since so many people have families that need a ride sometimes. That means the short-bed. If you just have midgets going with you, the access cab comes with the long bed. If its just 2 of you, the 2 door is cheapest.
The automatic seems to be rated higher for mileage, and is strong. But it costs more, especially when its time to replace.
The Tacomas have issues with frame rust, front axle bearings wearing out, wind noise, road noise, an annoying engine ticking, cab fan prematurely wearing out, rough ride, passenger seat rubbing noises. But the quality of the engine, suspension, and 4wd features are great, and so is that re-sale value.

From what I know a lot of dealers won't mark them down. The truck sells itself. I got mine for 29,000 (DCLB TRD Sport with entune, navigation, and tow). Even for that I had to pull out all the stops. I used a few ways to bargain:
-Truck will be outdated in 6 months, so help me out
-Its Chevy truck month! (deals to be had on Silverados in march. I pushed "why should I pay 32k for this when I get can a full size with better MPG for 34k!)
-Trucar price says 29000! (that was actually true car price for a BCSB 4x2, no pre runner or TRD package)

Even so, they didn't budge till I was walking out the door. Push hard for what you want, but be realistic.

    Hi and welcome.

    Shawn pretty much nailed it.

If you don't mind being inundated by sales calls, you could try TrueCar.com. You will find a good deal. You could also look at the Kelly Blue book fo the price of a new truck.
I have the Access Cab, 4 cylinder with auto tranny. I wanted a bare bones truck with a manual tranny but my wife got involved so I ended up getting the auto tranny ith upgraded radio and convenience package upgrades. I get 23 mpg. Every home needs a truck. I'm not into the heavy towing or 4wd stuff. All said and done, I'm pretty happy with the Taco.

Not true in Newnan GA. I went in to deal and they did adjust the price. They gave me a pretty good price to start with. I told them (well, asked them) that they could drop the price another some odd $$$. They moaned and cried a bit, and then they said OK, “IF" I purchased the truck right now. So I did.

Sometimes a better deal is available at the end of the month when a dealer needs a few sales to make their monthly quota. Also do your research and tell them your OTD price you are willing to pay and then be willing to walk if they do not meet your price. There are five Toyota dealers within 60 miles of me. Use multiple dealers to your advantage by shopping all of them. The money you save will be worth it.

Oh, and be aggressive when telling the sales person your OTD price. Of course the Sales Manager will have to approve the deal but you will be surprised how much negotiating will get you. Just make sure most of the changes are on their end.

I have a 4 cylinder and don't regret it. 4-cylinders in my opinion are easier to maintain and take care of, but that's just my opinion.

buy on the last day of the month, and the last day of the quarter if you can - so next is the last day of June.

we got a new 4-cylinder access cab base model with four speed since the used trucks cost almost as much as the new trucks, and you can get better financing on a new one. The four speed four cylinder automatic is not quick, but was a useful and economical truck. A year and a half later we traded it in on a high-mileage V6 with a towing package since we wanted to get a camper. The high mileage 2009 double cab TRD sport is a nice truck, and my wife loves it.

Well, allow me to rephrase: they are not marked down much on the lot. Meaning its not like you will find one with MSRP of 33k with a tag saying 29. Then again, it does depend on your region. The will negotiate to an extent though, as any dealer will.

    Cutting through the fluff.

If you can pay close to invoice you got a good deal. Pretty clear cut.

Toyota gives nothing as per my conversation with the dealer last week. He said its up to the dealer to give up their markup if they want to sell a truck.

Also the dealer I talked to told me he is selling more Tacomas than ever. Everyone is buying a 2015 because they don't like/nor want a 2016.

Ah, I gotcha. :) my bad.
The only advertised Tacoma deals were on leased Tacomas here in my town.
Anyone buying in October will get a very good deal ,if there are any 2014's left over.

I've had both, recently, a 4 cyl 5sp, and now a 6 cyl auto. The 4 banger got 19-23 mpg, the 6 gets 16-23. The mpg is much closer on the highway than around town, so if mostly highway, they'll be pretty close.

Get the 6 if you need to tow anything, or ever wish to pass someone while going up a hill. I find with the 6/auto one needs more more foot travel on the accelerator in order to provoke a good response from the motor, compared to the 4/5sp... but that may be more a function of the tranny, rather than the motor. It's been nearly 40years since I've owned an auto.

It's a very solid truck and I've found the local dealerships may have sales and incentives on every other vehicle on their lot, but never the Taco.

Thinking about trying to get that 4 cyl this weekend. With the SR package in Black it is a really sharp looking truck. If they are deadset on 25,500 do you all still think I would be getting a good deal? I should have a $500 military discount as well if I finance through Toyota.

We had a 2014 4 cyl access cab. Great economical truck. we just traded for a 2009 V6 with really high mileage. New, the truck listed for $35K. I don't think you'll see much of a discount under the msrp for Tacoma's. You can use Kbb or NADA to see what you should pay. If you are military, try going to usaa and using their buying service to get the best deal.

It's hard to find deals on a Tacoma as dealers don't have to sell cheap.

It's simple supply vs demand and right now it's a demand world.

Gas is cheap still and new model coming out.

Wow that high of a rate? I'd try USAA like someone already mentioned. Are you under on the Focus or something? Try other financial institutions see what you can get and you might do better using Toyota pretty sure it'll be 0% interest if you qualify.
