Alright so I picked up a kenwood dpxt01bt head unit with a wiring harness attached. It says ground is black, Yellow is the battery wire and Red is the ignition wire.

i attach the ground to the toyota brown, the yellow to the toyota gray, and the red to the toyota blue/yellow wire and have no power on this unit. Is their something I'm missing? I can't get this thing to power up at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an 07 access cab non jbl and no steering controls.

The 'battery' is the constant hot to keep the presets/clock good, the 'ignition' is to let the rest of the unit function in a key on/acc position, correct?

So why not test the unit directly with the battery? Clip on jumpers from the radio to the battery. You can take turns with the red and yellow, or do them both at once.

If the unit powers up that way, you know you're doing something wrong on your underdash wire matching.

If it doesn't power up, you may have a DOA unit.

Alright tried that and it powered up. Now my question is, which wires from the vehicle will correspond to this?

Also, is it just one wire harness I'm dealing with as far as power and speakers? Theres another smaller harness with a yellow, black, white and brown/white wire. Not sure if thats for the stereo or not

Sorry, I'm clueless on the under dash wiring, as I've never done a Tacoma. All I was wanting to do is help you diagnosis to be sure the radio was actually good. Now you know where your challenge lies.

I'd be using a DVM or even a test light to find the proper wires for constant and switched. Shouldn't be that difficult.

    Good luck!

    Toyota should have:
    Radio 12v blue/yellow +
    Radio Ground brown -
    Radio Ignition gray +
    Radio Illumination green +
    LF Speaker pink - , purple +
RF Speaker lt. green - , blue +
    LR Speaker black - , yellow +
    RR Speaker red - , white +

As far as standard aftermarket colors for the head unit, http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/headunitharness.asp

Got it figured out. The ignition gray was toast so had to run another wire from an accessory fuse.
