I guess the positive news is that your old hard drive is probably perfectly fine! You probably don't want to hear that right now though.

Is the laptop with a no bueno motherboard even worth anythig? Is it something I could like part out or use to build a new one? There's not way I'm dropping a grand on a new Mac.

Parts are not worth much, even from Macs. You never know, maybe an Apple store can flash the MB and get thing working. It's just as likely to be a firmware error as a physical problem.

Get a SSD from OWC. Their drives are the ONLY ones that resolve the "trim" issue that Apple put into there OS. If you get any other drive and install Yosemite. You will have issues. Get one of these drives:

Screen can be worth some money, especially to those with a cracked screen. The hard drive is the only other part worth anything, and unfortunately a 500gb spinner simply isn't worth much.

It may be worth more to put it up on Ebay, there are people on there who buy non-working stuff cheap with the hope of being able to restore it.

Ah. Those combo issues are the shits. I remember one time I swapped a MB for a buddy because you could see busted capacitors on the board and it was fairly "old" for a well overclocked computer. Turn the computer on and the BIOS quit in 5 seconds flat. Luckily I decided to try a spare power supply rather than keep firing up the board with a bad power supply. Everything turned on fine with the spare supply. Turns out his power supply and overclocking probably caused the capacitors to overheat yet didn't damage the CPU or anything. Talk about weird.

Yay. I figured it could be that. Awesome that it worked out.

I wonder how the F that cord got messed up. It doesn't move at all or anything. Any scorching or signs of what caused the failure on the old cord.

    I still think it's a MB/EFI problem.

Well I'll be home in a week so I'll get it diagnosed fully I guess.

It's just weird that it worked totally fine as soon as the new cable was put in and then all of a sudden it shits out again.
