Hey guys I just picked up a can of plastidip and went to work dipping my badges. After reading through numerous threads here on TW and elsewhere I decided that the best option for me was to dip the badges while they were still on the truck. I started this evening with the "V6" badge since it is the smallest and most simple. I thought it would be the best one to use as a test to perfect my technique. I taped newspaper around the badge to keep the plastidip where I wanted it and applied 3 coats per the directions on the can and everything went smoothly. When I removed the newspaper the majority of the overspray around the badge came off with it. Perfect! My question for those of you who have dipped your badges while still on the truck is... How did you remove the dip from the small areas within each letter? For example, the bottom of the number 6 in the V6 badge. I managed to get the majority of it out but I wouldn't consider it very "clean" looking. Sorry for the poor picture, it was dark outside.

I figure there is probably an easy way to do this and I'd love to hear how you all did this. Any advice on tools, techniques used etc would be greatly appreciated. Also, is 3 coats enough for badges or should I be doing more? I can't wait to get all my badges blacked out. I think it'll look killer on my SSM taco. Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the toothpick suggestion guys. I will also try more coats on the rest of the badges. Should I be doing 5 coats? More? Also, can I add coats to the V6 badge to try and "fix" it or would I have to peel it and completely redo?

I think I did 3 or 4 coats and they still look brand new after a year and a half. Adding more won't do anything because that is already dried on.

you can add to it no problem! it will peel it all off even after its dried.

Do around 5-7 coats just to make sure it will all come off although you are probably fine with 3-4.

I've always used something like a tooth pick and a razor blade, as you start peeling the small sections you may want to kinda slightly cut any that starts to peel that you don't want to peel. Also its plasti dip so its not ever perfect nor meant to be but will look fine from more than 2 foot away!

Just add more coat. I touch up my rims all the time from offroading.

I used to added like 5 extra coat+ on dry plasti dip because I want to make peel clean inside the O A etc with the toothpick method.

If you have sometime. Go to Walmart etc and buy those plastic dental toothpick. You can hide those under the letters if you cant get them out.

Plastic dip badges. Upgraded head unit, husky floor liners, BFG ko2 tires.
I also tried the toothpick trick. It did work well, but I had to redo my letters due to not enough coats. Second try and more coats it worked much better.

as others have said, a few more coats and toothpick. Also, make sure to check the top/bottom/sides of the letters for an even coat. My first time I messed up the tops because I didn't spray it correctly. Decided to peel it all off and redo. Much better this time around.

I ended up using a toothpick like many of you suggested and it worked great. It turns out I didn't get good coverage on the top/bottom/sides of the badges though cause it was kinda dark when I did it. The fronts of the badges look great but I will probably redo them this weekend to get better all around coverage. Thanks for the help everyone!

Also a tip for anyone who searched for a way to remove plasti dip. Just spray and soak the plasti dip with wd40 or similar product. Wipe it off like water.

Kerosene has the same effect, soak your rag in it and start a scrubbing! I recommend trying to peel as much as possible first though

The Key to plastidip is to remember its not spray paint. You have to pull your masking off while its still WET! dont let it dry it will just peel off....

Is 5 mins between light coats long enough for 5-6 total coats?

And after that final coating, how long would you say to wait before you start peeling?

If I am doing it on the car, I do mine differently I guess and I have none of these problems people ask/talk about. They have came out perfect and last. I just give it a coat let it set then go on it again. I keep it, "right before dry," (all coats). Then peel off my masking while all layers are basically still wet. That's what the Plastidip brand videos on youtube say to do, so I do...

Usually I take the time to take the badges off and plastidip them while they are off so they look SUPER clean. Its worth the couple extra minutes for the cleanest look.
But once you get it off, it will look so clean you probably wont even want to put them back on!
