Hey guys, I just installed an aftermarket double din radio in my 05 tacoma. Disconnected the battery, and uninstalled it accordingly to how every step follows. I am not wiring savvy but had to youtube a few things. Well any way, I turned the truck on, and it had a hard time starting and idling at 500-600 rpm.

Took the negative terminal off to check to see if it was the battery but nothing! The serp. belt is running slow and everything seems sluggish. I took the truck for a spin and still has steam on giving it gas. Honestly PLEASE HELP IM STUCK IN A WTF moment!

Installing a double din shouldn't cause you to have any issues like you are describing if the install was done right. Take the battery in and make sure its still good.

When you installed the HU did you use an adapter or did you splice into the wires?

Could you have run the battery down doing the install?

What you did by disconnecting the battery for a long period of time was blanking out the computer. It will have to relearn the idle, shift points for the transmission and other things. No big deal it just needs time to relearn. Should be completely fine in a few days.

I'm not sure, I unbolted the negative side and proceeded with ripping out the old and putting in the new.

I hope your right sir, Im cautious to take this on the highway to work! Is that a frequent thing in tacoma/imports? The radio is running flawlessly and the dome lights/ electronics are working well so its not a sign of the alt.

After awhile will it bring back up the idle speed? Its around 500 or lower now, seems like the engine is choking down but if I give it gas it drives normally.

It will correct itself after a bit. Very common with modern vehicles.

    Yup.
Wife's Rav4 damn near stalls out when she stops after pulling the battery.
It'll be fine after 4 or 5 cycles and a couple of days.

Cleaning the throttle body and MAF sensor would be a good idea too, since the low idle is most likely because the default idle position of the throttle plate isn't allowing enough flow through the dirty throttle body. It will learn and compensate on its own after a few drive cycles though.

I'm dealing with the same symptoms after disconnecting the positive battery wire. The truck now idles at like 500 instead of 750(where it should be). Sometimes it will dip below 500 and start to shake as of it's going to die. This actually happened once already and I had to restart the truck.
The only thing that's different is that I swapped my exhaust with a stock one to quiet it down. Any ideas?

You reset the ECU. Give it time to relearn. Typically it idles high after doing this. I would disconnect the battery again and clean the MAF then go for a 30min drive and see what happens.
