I have searched this a bit, but not really finding my answer.

I have a 2012 tacoma, double cab. I have a Thule roof rack, Square bar with the mounting kit that grabs onto edge of the roof in the door.

I want to buy a 3 person roof top tent, and am not sure if the roof will hold 3 people on the rack. Does the roof dent with that much weight?

Anyone have a rtt on their roof able to chime in.

    Thanks.

3 people on the roof of a tacoma sounds like a plan to dent the shit out of your roof...not to mention it would stink sleeping in....

Stinking isnt really an issue camping, and i dunno if it will dent, i see little cars with a 3 person rtt on them and they are just fine. Im just not sure how it would be with the thule rack, and what not.

Edited my original post as it was very rushed.

While I'm sure some cars are fine, in my opinion the tacoma has a thin roof that won't withstand much weight.

I would say the factory roof rails with a aftermarket rack would be your best bet.

I wouldn't risk it. If you decide to do it I would suggest a custom rack for the tent itself. I know Yakima told me that their roof rack was not meant to hold the weight of a roof top tent. First I would call Thule and ask what the load rating is for the rack you have. I went with the allpro pack rack for the bed after considering a roof mount.

That's how mine is mounted. Mt Shasta. Ive only had it up there for about two weeks. I have had two people sleeping in it, but I've had three in there at once checking it out. I am planning to and have no concern about it denting the roof. The Thule bars mount to the outer edges where the roof is the strongest, and are designed to hold substantial weight. I'd say go for it, as I have!

Also, remember that the ladder holds a substantial amount of the weight as well. You could always sleep with heads near the ladder, then it will be taking more than 50% of the weight. I'm pretty sure that these roofs are designed to handle the impact of the truck rolling though...

"rack that grabs the edge of the doors"
I wouldn't trust that to hold the 500-ish pounds that will add up to.
If you really want it on top of the cab, I'd get a system that goes into the factory tracks.

Expedition Portal's toyota forum would be a great place to ask this.
