    I suspect this, primarily. I'm sure they probably come off of the same assembly line in Asia, and one gets dropped into a Crown box and one gets dropped into a Mopar box, lol.

    :eek: Watch out!
    Sorry I'm no help because I don't know about the differences between the 2. Maybe its just me but it seems like more and more company's are going to this style filter (Tundras have them). They are a pain to change and a lot messier. All that plus it seems like there is less to them (because there is no outside case ) and they cost more. To me it just seems like another way we get screwed. Screw on filters ftw

    I actually like the cartridge filters, if they're designed correctly (mounted towards the top of the engine, upside-down, at an angle, with a catch lip and a drain located at the base of the filter housing). You just loosen them, break the seal, and wait while it drains. Then you can remove it and swap the filter out. Lots easier & cleaner than most of the spin-off units where they run down the side of the engine, or onto the frame rail/skid plate/exhaust pipe/your arm as soon as you break the seal.

    Of course, when they're mounted with the opening facing up, they're a huge messy pain in the ass to change.

    Edit- The spin-on unit on the Tacoma 4.0's are an exceptionally well-designed system for ease of replacement. Everything else I've ever owned (including my '99 3.4) have been messy as hell to swap.

    Besides our 4.0's my wife's 2.3L Focus is the easiest filter ever to change. It's right in front at the bottom of the motor and it's completely upside down; just unscrew a little bit, let the little bit drain and take it off and put in drain pan to empty the rest. No problems what so ever

    So far the Fords have been the most difficult vehicles to perform oil changes on. I owned 2 Rangers in high school and this new F150 is no different. The filter is in a terrible location, difficult to replace and oil gets everywhere. I do miss the Tacoma oil changes, very simple.

    Ugh. Totally do not miss my '99. A pain in the butt to get at, and no matter how I took the filter off it spilled oil on something.

    My Grand Am's filter was at a 45* angle at the bottom of the engine. Didn't get my hand covered in oil when I loosened it. Just a pain getting under the car.

    I would bet you are right about coming off the same line into different boxes. I am going to get some to look at and try. I changed the oil at 1000 and it was pretty easy. The filter is on the top under the engine cover. I just cracked it and let the oil drain while I did other stuff. Pretty clean and easy. That being said the tacoma was the easiest so far

    Lol. When I was about 19 I went into the local parts store (Big A) and asked for an oil filter for my (then) car. The guy gave me the option of a $4 filter and an $8 filter. When I asked him what the difference was, he said "one costs $4 and one costs $8. The $4 one comes in a white box, and the $8 one comes in a yellow box"

    I sell a brand that re boxes other companies products except they don't ditch the original packaging... They will put a Toyota filter in the Toyota box inside their box....and they typically are cheaper...

    I keep forgetting I've got the LED strip for this, I just need to figure out the circuit I want to do to run them. Undecided if I want to try and add in a tailgate switch, or just make it on/off. My perfect setup is a tailgate switch with a 3-position switch so they aren't on during the day. That being said, it's rare I even have my tailgate open.

    My Dak has something similar, with notches on top of the wheelhouses...they are for putting in crossbars to carry 4' wide items (plywood, drywall) above the wheelhouses. (IIRC, a Taco isn't 48" between the wheelhouses.)
